Brazing Flux

Right I'm up and running now with my gas set up.

Can anyone recommend some general purpose brazing flux to use with goldy (I thinks they are some sort of bronze) coloured rods (given to me free so dont know origin) and where I can get it from

Think a paste made from borax can be used for brazing.

you could try mixing your own, Boric acid powder and boiled or distilled water mixed to a paste is a basic flux

Thanks had a quick look on the net and it got a bit confusing as there seemed to be a different flux for each application.

Just ordered a tub of the sif stuff

What about sifredicote rods, they are flux coated brazing rods.

I use those. Really nice to use and easy.

Got lucky, been given an almost full tub of JM brazing flux, will give it a try when I get home

depends on what you are doing... I guess
I haven's seen anybody using them on bicycle frames
I guess the reason is that you want to protect the job while heating it up before you get your brazing rod anywhere near it? How do you do it with flux coated rods?

heat the job up and introduce the flux coated rod in to the heat and touch on job. its worth having a tin of flux as well and u can make some paste up and coat the parts as u put them together before heating

if you need a "tin of flux" and "coat the parts as u put them together before heating" you might as well go the whole hog and not bother with coated rods?
