I have a commission to make an "armature" for a figure for an arts trail. The figure is a 4:3 scale woman waving from behind a large hedge, she has one arm on the hedge. The figure will be stuffed with plants so no need for any facial features. She has to have large "balconettes" to stuff with plants, evidently these are large upper decker flopper stoppers as we called them at school. Its only from the waist up thankfully.
This was my first attempt at anything arty in metal, and also my first attempt at doing any human figures other than cartoon doodles at school so a bit of a challenge. Also as its going to be stuffed with plants its not really that representative of the human form.
I'm not going to be charging much, its for a friend and it was agreed over a bottle of wine, so I have used what materials were to hand, mainly some 10mm rebar and some welding rod but I did find some smooth 10mm rod and a bit of thinner stuff.
Remind me not to use rebar and thin welding rods again, a complete pig to mig, the combination of rusty rebar that is difficult to derust and different size of metal meant loads of bird crap welds.
Here it is folks, just need to rig up the kite and wait for a storm
She has a flat head as there's a sun hat to go on. I have made the rings for this, just need to weld it up then fill in the rest of the body with 50mm welding rod mesh and off she goes to London in the back of the car Tuesday morning.
Cheers
Andy
