I recently overheated my old Sil-Air silent compressor white spraying. It stopped dead and was too hot to touch. Next day went back and turned it on. It runs perfecty but is very very slow to fill up. It probaly table 4 or 5 times longer to fill up and struggles to reach high pressure. Does anyone know what is likely to be the problem? Also it had plenty of oil in.

I'm happy to be corrected here but aren't those compressors the rotary vane type ?
If so the oil has cooked and the vanes are gummed up.

Thanks for your thoughts. I don't really know much about them. Its one of those funny looking ones with the motor on top of the cylinder. Ive had the top cover off and you can see the motor. I was just a bit worried about taking it to bits but i suppose I've nothing to loose. If that is the problem will i need any new parts or will it just want a good clean up?

Sil-Air ones use fridge type compressors. You may have cooked the head gasket or damaged the reed valves. They only have a 50% duty cycle, 15 mins on, 15 mins off and need special synthetic oil.

Just taken the compressor bit off the tank so now i can see properly inside. (see pics) Can anyone give any advice on what to take apart next and what to look for in terms of damage? Thanks for the help so far, James

Remove the cylinder head, it's that bit at the bottom of the picture held in place by 4 screws.
The valve plate will come away at the same time.
You're looking at replacing the gaskets and cleaning up the reed valves. There are some pics in the link I posted above.

Ive taken the 4 screws and head off and theres no gasket there???
Also, what are the reed valves? Sorry im a bit useless.

no, i havent taken the thick plate off yet. Your right there is a metal shim, but theres not much left of it, i think this might be the issue. Ill give everything a good clen up and get it back together. Can i use normal gasket paper for the head gasket or should i use paste?

Just got this off. the valves are quite rusty so ill give these a goof clean off. ill try and get some paper asap and see how it runs.
