Broken Tooth

The pictures show my problem - a tooth has been lost from the gear wheel attached to the lead-screw where it enters (exits?) the reverse gearbox.

The lathe is an Atlas TV36 and I only use it for hobby/fun jobs. I am a novice user. It seems to work alright with the missing tooth and the auto-feed is fine (to my eye). Will the missing tooth affect thread cutting etc?

If it need replacing, are these bits available?

I think I have read somewhere that people (cleverer than I ) have replaced missing teeth by welding and filing a new one. Is this right? Can I use a Mig welder?

Give Mike Kurn a ring 01344 883417, he holds spares for Atlas lathes. The gears are Zamak, some kind of die cast zinc alloy, I wouldnt think you could weld repair. If its a 10F type Atlas the part number off the top of my head is 9-49A priced at £16-20 in 1989. (I lied, I looked in my parts book.)

The power feed might 'look' OK but once you start cutting under load it'll probably start slipping/ jumping, leading to a visible mark on the turned surface.

If it works I'd keep going with it whilst I sourced another. Just keep the loads low. Might be a bit of swarf has got in there perhaps stuck in the grease.

Incidentally, since you mention you're a novice, I see fresh grease on the gear, which is ok, and on the rack, which is also ok if somewhat unnecessary.

What is not ok is to use grease on the slideways. If you're using grease on the bed or on the cross-slide ways clean it all off with clean rags and WD40, and only use oil on those parts.

Did you hit the end stop with it. We have a cheap ****** lathe I hit the end stop with the feed on. Colchesters just jump out on the auto stop but this does not have one. another cost cutting feature!

Hi Chaps - many thanks for your replies and assistance.

CK - I will give Mike a call and try to get a replacement gear.

Pete - don't worry, no grease on the bed etc. I strictly followed the Oiling Chart in the Atlas manual (all 28 checkpoints) and only used oil on the bed etc.

Lawnmowerboy - I didn't hit anything when the damage was done - was just engaging the gearbox as I had always done & then heard a noise.

Made my day much more interesting and strengthened my resolve to repair my machine

Just spoken to Mike Kurn myself just today who is sending me a gearbox sliding gear and yoke to check if mine are damaged or faulty in some way along with the bull gear spring and detent ball!! what a guy!
