Not that often im stuck with a problem, but it seems im a little stuck on this one.
Friend of mine has a hook lift gear for a transit (similar to a tipping body) now he overloaded it and snapped part of the frame work, made a right mess of it. To be honest when i looked at it a think someone has modified it a little, 2 of the lifting bars had a welded join in them as if they had be shortened and rewelded. one of those was broken, on close inspection you could see where it had been join that it just wasn't welded with any power. so i told him to cut the other one on the welded joint and i would rewelded it correctly.
Having spent several hours animalising the whole thing with 7018 welding rods, its all nicely welded up and been re assembled and seems to work fine(that was friday). just spoken to him now to make sure its all ok and one of the lifting arms has cracked, but not on the welded joint, he says about 1/2 inch away from the weld.
Im thinking its to far away from the welded joint to be carbon migration (mild steel doesn't normally suffer that problem). The only other reason i can think of is stress as a result of being heated and cooling during the welding, but its only normal SHS, and as discussed on the forum you can't harden normal mild steel by heating and quenching (i didn't quench the weld), anyone any idea why it has split 1/2inch away from the weld or do i just put it down to best quality chinese steel.
