bugger .welding away tonight fabricating a load guard for my new work van and "pop".thats all.Set still runs but no power behind the arc to burn in .Any ideas anyone ?????????????????

Could be the contactor, (I assume its a mig) do you still get an arc when the wire makes contact?

have you checked the wire mate. i was welding away today and then nothing. then i checked the wire

is the wire actually feeding
try the trigger contacts etc
are the rollers working
is the wire stuck

if it is an arc it may have reached its max duty cycle and may be cooling down. thermal cutout

Its a Sealey 160 Supermig.

Sounds like a diode in the rectifier - if one pops and stays open circuit you'll have half the power.

Open up the machine and have a look at the rectifier - two aluminium plates with diodes, and see if one diode has a lot of smoke blackening around it. It's probably possible to buy new a rectifier.

thanx ill have a look see malcom .seems like that may be it because its got all the symptoms you describe jus got to find someone that repairs them around notts.any ideas anyone ????????????
