a chance conversation among a couple of bruffers turned into a opportunity to supply a lad with a 1930 ss80 correct magdyno for his bike he said i cant get one been searching for years ok il have a look
a nice one sans slip ring but other than that complete and fit to rebuild
a price was agreed i settled for the leg without the arm . ithought phone dave lindsley and get a 50 deg cam ring ' no longer trading ! bit dismayed i started butchering a chunk of aluminium bronze bar lovely stuff to turn made a ring then carefully marked from another bruff mag the position of the lobes leaving a little in hand for final dialing in with a deg disc on the armature
the voids between the humps were hollowed out with the die grinder with paralell burr horrible job
when assembled i have to dial the humps in to the field collapse to get the best possible sparks on 2cyls
always a compromise on v mags
now i had a lad phone me he has spent vast sums restoring his ss 100 to showroom concours nick it is truly outstanding came the time for first fire up no sparks at k start speed , had been done up by a specialist ? at stellar cost any way points position to flux collapse was miles out , so 2 options butcher cam ring or move keway on points , ah owner said it had been fitted with the better narrow platinum points , but when he got it back they had been swopped for a council k2f set with the keyway taper badly butchered beyond repair , a better old base was modded by soldering a wire to produce the key the taper does the work but the key helps to locate a proper re magnetise totaly woke it up and it now sparks just moving the armature over the knot
