We have a very small garden and the boss wanted a weather vane. This is what I came up with using bits of scrap. Letters are old tent pegs bent to shape. The pivot is a bolt with a point on the end with a tube over the top which is welded to the vane. The squirrel is 2mm plate about 150 mm tall cut with a jigsaw and filed. Its mounted on top of the washing pole and seams to work ok. She is well pleased with it.

Idea for dads birthday present helped along there! Didn't think of using a jigsaw for steel, and haven't got a plasma to cut out the sheepdog shape! Looks tidy mate!

Thanks for the comments guys. Dan, use a bit of light oil on the steel when cutting as it cuts easier and the blade lasts longer.
