I have a few things to paint which need durability but are not seen. I have 2k primer and some top coats. Can I cut down on the thinners and just brush this on? Is there a minimum amount of thinners that must be used for results.............or is the thinners purely to get it spraying from the gun?

thinners is just to make it come out of the gun , you could try a touch less hardner if its still runny

the 2k etch primer paints on realy well with a brush by hand leaving no brush marks and doesnt need thinning :build up primers and topcoat will paint with brush but isnt sucesfull . if u have any spare etch primer that has been mixed it will last in a jar with sealed lid a few days without going hard and can still be used
the topcoat mixed wont and will go like rubber in the pot 
Topcoat wil brush but you won't get a super flat finish. Use slow hardener (more chance to flow out), bit of slow thinner if any's needed. I've done axles/diffs type of thing and it flows enough not to leave any brush marks, if not exactly coachpainting finish.
If the bits can't be seen it doesn't matter a great deal anyway...

The etch primers are a bit old hat these days, The Epoxy primers are so much better in every way, They also brush quite well.
