BSA Meteor

Hi all - I have been given a Mk4 Super Meteor air rifle. Perfect gun for my son to learn to target shoot.

Looks like its in excellent condition but its not been used for quite a few years so it will have all dried out.

Any information on stripping and oiling and where to get spares from?

I have used "Chambers" for air rifle bits and they seem to be ok.

Try it and if it works just use it. I have an old BSA Cadet rifle upstairs and it still fires nicely despite being used about every 10 years.

get it chronied see if the spring is weak and loosing power it should just be under 12 psi if its ok

Chambers gunsmiths are the place for spares, and have exploded diagrams too. RE main springs, be careful. I fitted a "standard" replacement mainspring in a weirauch hw80 and let's just say for a brief time I was,legally standing, in possession of a firearm, and not just by a couple ft/lbs either. Took it apart whilst still at the range and removed the spring

I used to have 2 of them, gave one to my uncle. I use moly grease on the spring, but only a light coating, too much and it will diesel. You will be lucky to see 10ft.lb, mine has a heavy spring and i doubt its even close to the 12ft.lb legal limit, compared to other air rifles ive used.
Take the stock off, 2 screws at the front, 1 behind the trigger. I use a piece of wood cut into a 2 pronged fork to get round the pin and press the spring down and thats it apart.
I have to say that the one that was left standard was much nicer and more accurate to shoot than the one i have now with the heavy spring

First rifle i ever had was a Bsa meteor, Xmas present aged 13. Bsa used to use a gun oil that had a particular lovely smell & i can still smell it today.
I shot my first pigeon & rabbit with it & shot it so much that i actually wore its barrel out! I used to put a tin of pellets through it every week & had it for 3 years until i sold it to a mate. I upgraded from that to one of the first FWB sports imported into the UK, that rifle was light years in front of the meteor & i still have it. Happy days

12ft/lb not psi. I doubt if when new it was near 12ft/lb. Chambers is the place for spares. Strip and clean it. Loads of info on the BSAOG web site.

A standard meteor usually runs at about 10 to 10.5 ft lds (muzzle energy) Contrary to popular belief sticking a bigger spring in does not make them more powerful & often reduced power. All it did was make the gun harder to cock & increase noise & vibration, bit like putting an open mega exhaust on a moped!
Renowned Airgun smith Jim Bowkett used to tune Meteors to near the legal limit & this actually involved cutting a standard spring down.

tuning is far better than sticking an ox spring in . smoother action and no twang when fired. the slight difference in power is negligible . people put them in and they think they have a cannon I have a standard hw77and it can knock anything down at 30 yards with an accurate shot

On springs can make a gun harsh, I would agree a good tune is the way to go

A few forums have guys that have tuned these, making the stroke longer/changing o ring head to parachute etc. You can get 11.5 ft lbs out of one without a massive spring but they work best at around 10.5 in standard trim.
