Buffing

Hi, i'd like to buff up the paint on my disco. It has a few light sratches from some bushes, and a few from car parks.

Now i've never buffed a car before, could some one point me in the right direction as to how to do it, and what not to do please.

The car is black wether that makes any difference.

if you intend to use a compound on the paint you will need a bodyshop polisher you wont be able to use a drill or grinder with a polishing head on them because they spin far too fast and will just burn the paint (friction) you can always polish by hand if this isnt an option using something like faracla g10 which will remove minor scratches then wash and wax as normal.
its hard work by hand though.

a bottle of t cut
and a load of elbow grease followed by a good car wax .buffing with a machine can take more paint off than necesary also if any grit gets on the pad will scrach it more

as above... but I would use a polymer/resin polish such as autoglym to finish

Thanks for the replys, my brother has a buffer was going to use that. But if by hand is best i'll do it that way. At least i'll get some exercise that way.

Don't use t-cut! It's far to aggressive. Use proper polishes like Meguires, Menzera, 3M, etc.

There are EXCELLENT guides on detailing world about using both a rotary polisher and a dual action polisher to get out scratches then refine to leave a perfect finish. However, if you can catch your finger nail on the scratch it won't come out, but you can make it look better.

What kind of buffer is your brothers? A DA or a rotary? A DA is very user friendly and basically fool proof, a rotary commands respect, 1 false move could cause the pad to catch and the rotary to fly out your hand causing lots of damage, and you can also burn through the paint if you're not careful.

You can get black wax polish just for this job and it works quite well but it is very messy

Good links there by h3rman. I'm on DW quite a lot [too much ] and although there are polishes which will mask scratches/swirls they don't tend to be durable and will eventually wash out, leaving you back where you started in the first place.
DA polishers are, as said, basically foolproof and superb results are possible with a bit of time and care.
