Building a blast cabinet

Has anyone built one of the self build kits from Anglo scott abrasives?,

I'm picking up an SK3 kit on Wednesday as a birthday pressie from the wife

It says to build it with plywood, but my brother in law says I'd be better using MDF as its more stable. What do you guys think?

I'm planning on painting the outside and lining the chamber with steel sheet.

Should I fit some sort of dust extraction? what would be suitable?

Any other suggestions welcome.

a dust extraction would be must. the hose fell off the one at work a couple of weeks ago and within seconds you couldn't see what you were blasting! any decent vacuum cleaner would be a step in the right direction. to save a bit of money on gloves at work we just use thick long rubber gloves and the cabinet has a rubber flap with an X cut in it that you stick your hand through

wish ide you'd created this thread 2 months ago as there was a propper blasting cabinet with dust extraction,lights the full monty in my local scrappy...sat there for weeks before it got crushed and ime only over the water from you mate

Lucky b*****d, you`ve got a great wife. Lining the cabinet in steel is a damned good idea, as for a dust extractor, you want to fit a filter at the cabinet side of it or you`ll be forever emptying the vacuum bag into your hopper. Mdf will do it fine if you line it with steel as its cheaper and easier to work with (though wear a dust mask, its got formaldehyde in it and that will cause nasal cancer). You`ll also want to fit a light in each top corner of the unit, just make sure you have a perspex cover over it.

MDF tends to sag after time because the fibres in the wood are so small.
I'd use ply myself.
B&Q sometimes have so cracking deals on really good grade marine ply which is really strong.

I use a Dyson for dust extraction in mine, it's the mutts nutts. Even while blasting there is negative pressure.

I would use rubber as a lining ,long lasting and easily changed ,old conveyor belting or gasket rubber works a treat ,as already stated extraction is a must

Bloody good idea mate, it would also help your media last longer because any media that hits it wont break up as it would on metal.....

I have a big old vac I use in the workshop, it's bloody powerful so I'll use that for extraction.

I think I'll build it with good quality ply as that's what the kit suppliers recommend.

I built one myself using MDF, no problems so far. I doesn't get daily use though.

I've also changed it a little.
1) I got a proper (cheap) sandblasting kit from a kit-car show to replace the spot blasting bit.
2) I don't use the failed blue vortex tub, never worked well enough, just use a FreeCycle Dyson now.
3) It has got taller, I got some longer legs for it
