I've had an old gas bottle sat in the garden for the last 6 months waiting to become my new propane forge i'd just been putting it off while deciding how best to line it etc...
Well after a visit from a lovely chap called TimGunn from Britishblades.com, i now had all i needed to crack on with the forge and no more excuses.
First things first, get the angle grinder out, fit a 1mm cutting disc and get the top off.
First time using a Lidl £20 grinder and i must say its pretty good, 1200W made short work of the tank.
Lots of stinky sludge.

Next up was to cut a hole for the burner
Titan hole saw set from screwfix (on offer atm) and i think they're just as good as ones double the price.(19, 22, 25, 32, 35, 38, 44, 51, 57, 64 and 76mm, not bad for £30
As long as you drill a pilot hole first, drill at the right speed (not to fast) and keep them cool with plenty of lube they'll last a long time.
This is the burner holder that will be welded over the hole, ive tapped 3 holes in it so i can aim the burner in the forge. Its just a 1 1/2" barrel nipple
Not to bad a fit, i just dressed it a bit with a flap disc.
Next i cleaned out the junk and took it inside to start the cleaning and welding
All the gear, no idea.
My new speedway and homemade cooler, fancy heh...
Im a novice welder with only about 15 hours practice and ive never tried welding pipe before so why not make my first time really difficult and awkward :P
Didnt turn out to bad, i think i was to hot but it'll clean up nice and its only got to hold a lightweight burner in place.
Welding pipe is pretty difficult especially in the position i was in, im going to practice pipe some more over summer.
Im going to use the top of the cylinder i cut off as a door, i couldn't decide how i was going to make the hinge but then i found a bit of scrap that would do.

My welding was pretty messy today, i just wasnt feeling it and was rushing to get done.
Hmmm... i didnt think this through very well, i probably should have just stick welded it but couldnt be bothered to drag everything outside.
Ummm
What i ended up doing was just laying a 2.4mm rod in the gap, cranked the amps up to about 115 and just ran over it, it worked really well and fused in both sides nicely.
I ran a few more beads over the top both sides and left it at that, done for the day.
I'll update the thread when i get some more done.
