i am fabricating a coal fired range, are there any electrodes that would be less liable to crack in the long term with the thermal expansion, and contraction of the stove ?

The fire bricks will take the serious heat, so the shell will not be mentally hot.

In short, no, assuming the steel you're making the stove from is just a run of the mill mild steel. A 6013 or a 7018 if you prefer (and are doing positional work - 7018's can be easier on verticals etc). If you use 7018s make sure your weld set can run them (DC or the correct OCV) and that they're dry.

I'd just use a 6013 though.

It's more appropriate if you're going to be getting lots of expansion and contraction to make sure the welds are decent.

And don't forget that your grate will need to be able to stand the heat without collapsing, so make it from something chunky unless you're using a cast, bought in grate designed for coal.

Are you going to line the stove with fire brick? It will make the steel last longer and keep the warpage down. As said about the grates use a good cast iron thick grate it will last the longest. I built wood and coal stoves for 10 years in my dads factory. Still have some parts left and that was 27 years ago. Oh and we just welded ours with a mig and .035 wire...Bob

I built 200+ woodstoves and used 4mm mild plate and later Corten. Welded with plain rods or mig wire. Never any trouble with cracking. But def line the lower part of the fire box with firebrick. Even 20mm bricks make a big difference to the life of the stove. There are two schools of thought on the fire box area. One is the flat floor with draft from vents in the doors and the other is a grate with draft from either the doors or under the grate. Tried both, but mostly the first. Really not sure which is better, cleaning out is a bit better with a draw under the grate, but no big difference.

Is this lining of the lower part of the stove essential for wood and coal stoves (made from gas bottles) I have one in the near complete state, all i need to do is decide do i want it to be multi fuel or just wood. If its coal and wood do i need to line the lower part of the stove ie: underneath the removable grating in the ash collection area ?

But you could use refractury (sp) cement to line the lower section, needs a while to dry and gentle heat to start with. Coal in a steel fire box will burn it out pretty soon. Some sort of cast iron grate would be good.
Once I get pix sorted, I will post some designs that I have used.

I seem to be having some difficulty obtaining a piece of pipe for the chimney. Or at least difficulty with obtaining one for a decent price. Does anyone in my area have one or know of anywhere one can be got cheap? (Chester area)

the flue pipes are not cheap if it's going in a house your chimney will need to be HENSA approved due to chimney fires from wood type stoves also check with your home insurance as to how you stand you may find they wont cover a home made range

we are in Doncaster i enquired about a multi fuel burner and it seems only two are approved for use in a smokless area so fire and chimney £5000 so give up on the idea

you might want to find out if you can use coal I'm sure all of London is smokless zone you may need to use coke not coal

Sorry, I was not clear enough as to what I wanted. A plain steel tube would be fine really. It need not be something manufactured purely as a flue/chimney. Any old steel pipe of sufficient thickness and approx 4 to 5 inches diameter.
