Bus lane PCN

I'd never knowingly drive in a bus lane. Visiting an area I previously knew well, lived there for a few years. It seems after covid they changed the layout in one area to be bus and taxi only. There was reasonable traffic which didnt look like just taxi's.

However they did not put normal sign posts up, the only indication to say its a bus lane, is that they put BUS GATE in the road in yellow paint and not in a position that would be seen well in advance. There was traffic and so I did not see it. I am certain if there was a proper sign post I would have gone the other way it.

I'm not disputing that I did it, only that the signage is poor and it feels like I have been trapped by a money making scheme.

They’ve got something similar in my town, the signs changed about five years go, from something fairly simple to understand at a glance, to some new ‘woke’ colour scheme signage.

And what the hell is a ‘Bus Gate” anyway?

go back and take photos or check online using google and see if the signs are there

if no clear signs then you have a right to dispute there claim

but this is up to you what you do but id still check anyway

Round here they have 5m long sections of bus lanes dividing estates with cameras

I got caught by one. Crawling at 4mph looking for an address. Stopped in the middle when I realised but had no choice but to continue. £90..

I realise theres no point contesting it and risking it double from £35 to £70. Others will have, yet its still the same. That leaves me with no option than to let my blood boil with rage every time I go near the place. Perhaps at rush hour to do many rotations of a particular roundabout and cause traffic chaos. Is there any law against rounabout laps?

A small number of people could bring a city to a halt with relative ease.

(I'd never do it, but cant help that my mind is thinking up ways to get value for the fine).

There's one near me where it seems designed so that if cars park on the opposite side (which they often do) then it results in being pushed into the lane to avoid a collision with overtaking vehicles.

Happened to me once...£100...lesson learned. Now I stick to my lane...here in London you'll even get a fine for pulling into a bus lane for a blue light vehicle!

normally if its a ******gate, it indicates that there is some political scandal there, like Watergate or Irangate, but what they would have been doing on a bus, I have no idea

I got done going into one near Trostre steelworks - I’d gone down early morning on a call out and inadvertently took a wrong turn into a bus only marked lane as I turned into McDonald’s to pick up a coffee before I got to work.

I paid it but it turns out it’s “caught out” hundreds of drivers, which kind of points to it not being signposted very well.

I thought it was three rotations of a rounderbout max then you get done for something but that's probably urban myth from my knee sliding days and reading Fast Bikes magazine

I did once ride around Parliament Square a few times with my very loud Remus exhausts cans on the bike as a protest to the ulez I'd had to pay that day
Made me feel better and I wasn't polluting the air as I'd paid my monies

Would contesting it, double it?.

It is infuriating but unless you are in the right, cheaper to pay it, thieving sods!

I got done in Cardiff a few years ago, 8 o clock at night, roads empty, pic was of just me looking for a sign. Moneymaking scheme, simple as.

In London it's yellow boxes too you have to watch for....you think it's clear and then as you set off the car on your left undertakes you and you're stuck in a box trying to do 1mph and hoping a space re-appears!

I've been done on that one before on the Euston Road. Once bitten twice shy etc etc.
Now I wait until there's space in front then absolutely nail it to prevent some cock from cutting me up, it's surprising how many people it surprises when that happens and they're now stuck across two lanes on a box junction
I wonder if they get two fines?

Is a local council issuing the fine?

Make it awkward for them. Dispute the unclear signage and start their appeal process with any photographic evidence. Also make a request under the freedom of information act as to whether any similar appeals have been made on the basis of unclear signage. They are obligated to respond.

In your appeal state you will be making the information request but do that separately.

If, as and when they don't respond then start a Stage 1 Complaint against them.

Then they pull up alongside and start the verbal...even though they're entirely in the wrong!

Most box junctions are unnecessarily large and are recognised as having been deliberately designed like that to capture revenue. There have been many successful appeals on those grounds, but you do have to appeal your rejected appeals so that it goes to adjudication.

I'd suggest paying up then challenging it. That way they can't increase it but you can still fight it, and get a refund if you win, if that makes sense?
