hello everyone.
Decided to start posting on this forum becasue it isnt as boring as the ukwelder one.
i have just got my c+g mig level 2 and am hoping to gain employment as a semi skilled welder with it. Ive been on to a load of agencies but no joy yet. I also just got my garage sorted out a bit and am starting to get some projects done. Just made a shop sign bracket and am about to start messing about with a calor gas bottle to make a patio heater/wood burner affair. I can see from this forum that its the thing to do !!! Ive also put in a new wheel arch on golf mk2 and even fixed my dads exhaust pipe on his citroen.

Would appreciate any advice on what I should try to do next skill wise to get a job welding.

The agencies probably won't be much use if you've not got any coding history, and the wages will be rubbish anyway.

If you want work go knocking on doors at fab shops and see if you can get a start - not necessarily as a welder though - labourer or mate is more likely. Still rubbish wages, but if you're a semi skilled welder (rather than a top line stick or tig hand), they'll never be anything else I'm afraid.

There's probably work in Leeds for an enthusiastic metal botherer.

As Drains says, companies using agencys are going to want someone who has the relevent codings/experience and will walk in on Monday morning and weld from dusk till dawn. Whilst an agency might take someone on with less experience and try to punt him/her on as an all singing/dancing trained welder (They are good at that..), it won't be long until the shop foreman is onto the agency with his shouty head on. If your semi skilled/starting out, the best bet would be employment with a fabricator who, when he sees how you perform, will be willing to spend the time and money putting you through a few codings here and there. Sounds like your going to have to work your way up the ladder as it were.

Hitting the fab shops and fence/gate builders is my next step. Im willing to work from the bottom. Rubbish wages dont phase me. It'll still be better than working in a pub!
I've spoken to a couple of the agencies and there is still work for someone who is relatively unexperienced. There are always people not willing to pay full whack for a time served or coded welder. So if i can get a foot in the door and a bit of experience I would be pleased enough.
I also seemed to be one of the few people on my course that didnt want to work on an oil rig. Im more interested in bikes and cars.

i bet there a lousy firm to work for and low payed theres a scrap yard and a plumbers near me allways advertising for staff i wonder why

ever contacted Ivanhoe Forge in seaton Delaval?? I knew Ivan very very well in the seventies, and his sons worked for him, Billy was one, dont know if they still own it, but I believe they secured a good contract for continuety of work, seem to work a bit overtime and just built a canny extension to the existing unit, cost very little to try, maybe try Welbar engineering as well across in Blaydon, they were an excellent supplier when I was employed and nothing was a bother to them,You may want to speak with Ronnie. sorry cant be of much more help other than to wish you the very very best.
