the cheap sets are too thin and not realy up to the job. they flex too much 0ver false ceilings and under floors so I use the thicker ones but I'm not paying over 40 quid a set when u can get the fibreglass rods for 2 quid each .the brass couplings are easy to make and are just glued on to the rods with araldite . the magnetic pickup is handy when u drop tools or fit to end of rods and use a compass to pinpoint where the rod end is in hollow walls

i have one in my set didnt know thats what it was for broken a few doing various re wire jobs but found a old set in a loft to replace them

I have the Super Rod Mega Set (£120). It's paid for itself many times over, my favourite is the luminous rod, perfect for poking up into a roof space and spotting it in the dark.
The cable grips are good as well, saves having to tape your cable to the rod.

My best cable tool though is an RC tank that I use on one of our sites, the floor is hollow so when I need to pull in a new cat5 cable I drop the tank under the floor and it pulls my cable(s) all the way back to the comms room, it has a camera on it that transmits an image back to my phone so I know I'm heading in the right direction.
It was just a kids toy originally and it will make a machine gun sound if you press one of the buttons, I got told off once as I got it lost so I kept pressing the machine gun button to find it, turns out it was under the floor in the conference suite where they were interviewing candidates for a new job.

before they were brought out I used high tensile fencing wire but u had to be carefull not to scratch peoples furniture . also u could pull loose wires out of joint boxes and get fries on other end of wire

I keep saying that I will get a ferret for cable pulling but I like the idea of a RC tank.
My Super Rod set is about twelve years old and I've only lost one ferrule, I do go nuts if anyone tries to uses Stanley to remove tape from them probably helped them to survive so long.

I have acquired 2 sets over the years.
The modern one is a blue glass fibre version, is not bad. But as said can flex to much.

The best set I have is cane/ rattern with lovely made brass ends with left handed threads. It is fantastic to push under floors, ceiling voids.
I have no idear of it's age, but I do know it is EX MOD kit.

Where can you get the £2 a pop rods & what size are they please as I have need of some for other purposes .?

I got the fibreglass rods of ebay they did various sizes bought them a year ago but just made them up last week

what a surprise . wifey came home tonite with a set of blue rods from aldi I said I already have a set of them in garage I never use and ive just made a thicker set at weekend .thank god they were only 6 quid

Using their 3 mtr lengths of fibre glass 8 mm O/D tube means I can now start thinking about making a set of small crop extending mini poly tunnels for my 900 mm high raised veg beds . Not only to extend the growing seasons but to also drape them with butterfly impervious netting to keep the sodding cabbage whites off the greens .

This time last year all my brassica were little more then green lace net curtains due to cabbage white butterflies and that was before I went away on three weeks holiday . They all got sprayed with "Plant rescue " the day before we left , by the time we'd returned there was some harvestable greenery left .
