Can Anyone ID This Motor Coupling?

Its a flex coupling between a 3hp motor & a pressure washer pump. Instead of the usual star shaped plastic/rubber thing between the 2 halves this has 8 hard plastic rollers. Out of the 8 there are only 2 I would consider usable, the rest are damaged or completely busted.

If I can ID the coupling I can see if replacement rollers are available, if not I can make new rollers on the lathe.

What would be a suitable plastic to make the rollers? Delrin? If anyone has something suitable I might be interested, the rollers are 1/2" od.

Who has made the pressure washer, in particular the pump itself? If it is someone like Interpump, look on their site.

As it is a flange mounted pump, the coupling would have been supplied with the pump, specific to the manufacturer of the pump. They make the assembly in such a way that it guarantees to mate with the correct IEC spec. motor.

We used to call those lovejoy or spider coupling . Some people jaw
There are so many known manufacturers and made in house stuff it’s unlikely you’ll get lucky at a power transmission specialist but worth asking. It’s lucky it’s rollers so you can make them
I’ve always changed the complete unit but that was in a production environment and no time for faffing and the drivers would be damaged

Are you sure? The flange on the pump is a separate part and will fit a number of different manufacturer pumps, hawk, annovi reverberi and interpump, possibly others. Some of these pumps also share the same shaft diameter so the same coupling will fit. I’ve been to machines and removed an annovi reverberi pump and fitted an interpump and not had to change a flange or a coupling.

@Turbo I’ve not seen a coupling like that before on a pressure washer.

This is the setup - its a Hawk pump coupled to a 2.2 kw Brooks motor via the ally flange adapter on the rhs of the photo. The flex coupling is inside the adapter.

My experience is similar to @carbon - pumps like hawk, interpump, AR, etc are interchangeable & use the same adapter as long as you get the same shaft size.

I think I'll make new rollers, can anyone suggest a suitable machinable plastic for this?

Looking at hawk pumps website there coupling looks very similar but they don’t seem to list any parts available for it.

I've some high density polyethylene that might do the job.
It's very stringy but you can get a lovely finish with it, even I can get an ok one.

They would likely know if the rollers are available as spare parts.

The difficulty with making the rollers is knowing the correct plastic to use. My guess is that delrin is too soft. Nylon absorbs water, so the environment is wrong. Maybe one of the 'super nylons' would do, but you'd need to know which one and small quantities of the correct one would be hard to find.

There are guidelines around concerning how to identify (or narrow down the possibilities) of what plastic the originals might be. Simple tests, like does it float in water, how does it react to a hot soldering iron, a naked flame, the smell when burning. Try some of those to see if they help.

You have to balance the time it will take to make new ones added to the possiblity that they will fail prematurely (warranting a second teardown) with the cost of a proper replacement part (roughly 33 Euro).

I have EMG Services already bookmarked, I need new piston oil seals & I'm trying to find somewhere that are not charging a rip-off price for postage! The seals cost £6 & the cheapest postage so far is £6, one place is looking for £15 postage! I'll give them a call regarding the rollers.

Not the end of the world if I have to make them, my time is free & it will be a fun project. The coupling was running fine & I only discovered the broken rollers when I had to separate the housing to replace an oil seal. No matter what plastic I use its going to be better than what was there.

I've just a blocks of it, I keep hacking away at it until its the shape and size I want.
Wood bothering gear works fine to get close.
For the rollers I'd probably use a hole saw (without the pilot) to get rough size blanks then finish on the lathe.

If I do need to make the rollers I'll see if I can source some round bar first, it would be a lot easier to make them from that. If that proves fruitless I'll keep you in mind, though I have a large slab of nylon somewhere I could use.
