Can I put two coats of stonechip on?

Hello there,

I have used two 1l tins of stonechip coating the rear of my mini but i am unsure whether it is thick enough especially around the wheel arches.

It is quite rough compared to some of the other areas I've done.

Could I put another coat on or would this make it worse (cracking etc...)

Yes you can put another coat on- or several- after the first one has flashed off. Are you using a schutz gun to apply the stone chip?

What do you mean it is rough?? Pictures please.

Sorry I haven't got any pictures at the moment.

It's smooth in some places because I had the distance between the gun and the surface and the quantity out the gun just right.

I think it is rough because I held the shultz gun too far away from the surface in some areas, e.g. the arches.

Sorry what do you mean flashed off?

Flashed off means the surface of the paint (in this case anti stonechip primer) has dried, although the paint has not completely cured. Thus you can overpaint with more stone chip after flashing off but need to let it dry properly before applying top coat.

By the way, stonechip primer is not supposed to be smooth. It is supposed to have a textured finish. The sills and underside of quality cars such as Porsches are finished with textured stone chip covered with a top coat gloss paint. It will look a lot better if you overpaint it.

What are you going to overpaint the stone chip paint with?? (It should always be finished with a gloss type paint as stonechip primer is partly porous).

Cheers, it was stonechipped last Thursday so hopefully it will be cured by Tuesday when I can work on it again.

I plan to apply a cellulose top coat to it and then possibly clear waxoyl just to be sure.

Some of the stonechip is smooth (but textured) but some is quite rough (abrasive)

Aha! I understand now, yes, you had the gun too far away from the panel and some of the stonechip sprayed on a bit dry. What you could try, is adding just a little thinners to the stonechip and spaying a wetter coat in those rough areas- that might help the stonechip flow a little and cover the roughness.

make sure the stone chip your spraying on is solvent based ,before you add thinner ,because there is water based stone chip out there,as for the roughness ,it needs to be dry ,and then you can dry sand with 320 ,and then give it an even coat of stone chip.
