Can I use a £10 Ebay pressure switch?

Hi,I have an ancient 3hp 240v compressor which has a broken 20A pressure switch with a 1/2" single port.

I've looked all over the internet,and there are many 20A pressure switches available for less than £10,but they have a 1/4" port,but for a switch with a 1/2" port the price is over £50.

Is there any reason for me not to get a £10 pressure switch and fit a threaded adaptor to make it fit? (adaptors are about £3).

I've had a cheap ebay one on mine for a few years as well, all good really.

hate to say it but ive been using one of those ebay pressure switch on a 3 phase maybe 5 hp compressor that runs in our garage, dont even use the pressure unloader facility and its worked flawlessly for the last 3 to 4 years getting tough use 6 days a week from 8 in the morning till 11 at night

Some of the pressure switches on the bay are a bit c**p they tend to have a large differential.
Good pressure switches are telemecanique XMPE12b2431 1/4 bsp, single phase up to 12 bar 174 psi,best part is they have 1 bar differential, built in compressor head pressure unloader and about £25
3ph version is xmpe12c2131
They do hundreds of different ones I spent ages checking part number /costs, they can be up to £100 for virtually the same just maybe diff thread.
I have one in my hand as I type!
The BIG advantage is the pressure diff. the cheaper chinese ones are at best about 3bar

A 1 Bar differential may sound better, but could cause the motor to exceed its starts/hour rating, possible results are start capacitor fails, motor overheats and worst of all total motor failure.
Always get the motor specs before making changes.

What differential should I aim for on a 150psi compressor - roughly what psi should the motor cut in at?

Mine cuts back in at 95psi which is about what most of the tools run at.

IMHO as small as possible.
The problem with only having 95psi in the tank is that, at the gun after 30-40 ft of hose you would get far less and as the pressure drops the cfm through the hose and fittings drops dramatically.
My guns are far more efficient at a higher tank pressure. I used to waste more air running the guns light just to get the compressor to cut in to get the pressure back up to get a short burst of high pressure.

i dont get any drop or loss i use 3/4 bore hose on longish lengths a claw couplings with these on the end

And I don't use 30 to forty feet of pipe I have 20 feet of 1/2" bore and it reaches anywhere in my shed I use a longer one when painting but my spraygun only uses 30 t0 40 psi and the tank will fill while the gun is still running.
