Can you grind tungsten with CBN?

Anyone know? Got some slightly worn carbide stump grinder teeth, I reckon there's a sharpen in them without interfering with the brazing. I don't have a green wheel (I could get one) but some sources say CBN is suitable for grinding tungsten. Could imagine it would give a much sharper edge than silicon carbide in a green wheel, and I already have an 8" grinder set up with CBN wheels so that would be my preferred option.

Stump grinder companies will say 'green wheel for carbide' but most of these same people still think an aluminium oxide wheel is best for steel so frankly they don't know ****.

Diamond resin bonded wheel is best, but CBN will cut TC with no problems, similar hardness to diamond.

I havent used CBN abraisves but I have used CBN lathe inserts to cut carbide.

There are lots of cheap and decent diamond wheels on ebay/amazon.

I know diamond will gall quickly on steel, wheras CBN stays clean.

Steel is soft and gummy, carbide is rock hard and sintered.

Cheap diamond is only any good for honing. Expensive diamond rips carbide off

Bit like ceramic abrasives then- cheap **** is useless, expensive **** you can see the difference soon as you try it.

Any recomendations for a good quality diamond wheel, 200mm? I've just tried a tooth on the coarse CBN wheel. It was slow but accurate- however I'd rather have the best thing for the job rather than wear out a CBN wheel on this regular task.

Make sure you're sitting down, you might want to stick with the cbn if it works

You get carbon binding with steel

I use cbn wheels. They cut carbide fine and when I’ve got a brazed carbide tool they tolerate the steel body

^^^^ both these guys know far more than me.

The weak point is the glue. Push too hard and it melts.

As Brad says they’re cheap so good for honing but if you have a good machine operator and the bloke on the grinder isn’t a moron they’re a good solution for the price.

Never tried them on a variable speed grinder. Might make a difference

Edit - I got one of these for a guy last week. He had a green wheel for his bench grinder that predator sold him. Crap. He’s reasonably pleased with these. Pushes a bit hard though.

Nothing wrong with cheap chinese diamond wheels. Have a few, no significant wear and they cut well. Might be slower with a lower diamond %, but comparable to the proper ones, have a few.

Getting the right grit size is more important. 600 grit for honing edges. 60-180 for stock removal.

Can anyone recommend a 200mm griding wheel that doesn't cost the earth. Or maybe I should stick a 150mm on it.

Who are part of SGA, who are complete bunch of french w*nkers. They bought out Nimbus to reduce competition, moved everything to China, then closed it down. Used to work for them.

Try to avoid buying any SGA products where possible, but its a big group.
