Can you still get old style helmets like this one?

I quite like the look of the old style welding helmets, but I can't really find any anywhere, or even pictures of them. I did find one here though:

I'm not even sure if it's leather, or cast iron or something. What were they made of? I've always fancied a motorcycle helmet that looked like a welding mask as well hehe. Probably wouldn't get a great view out of it though...

I think they're some sort of fibreglass. Cast iron would be a tad on the heavy side!

They are the stereotypical headshield everyone thinks of thats doesn't know any better.
Id say you can still get them. Probably do that sort of thing in Halfords...?

I still use my old fibreglass one if I'm doing overhead work - much more heat resistant than the modern jobbies. I was 'issued' mine when I was an apprentice in the late 70's, but I think I have seen similar advertised fairly recently.

I use an old vulcan fibre screen in work, you can still get them. they are made by a company called north safety products. I have got a auto darkening filter in it but I can't remember who the filters is made by, will have a look when I'm back on shift tonight and let you know.

Not at Protoshell prices, they are about £35 retail, lovely and light, and very compact, probably why they are popular with pipe fighters as they have to double as contortionists half the time to get to some of their welds.
Don't leave them out in the rain though, they get soggy as the fibre absorbs moisture

coupled with a gold plated lense,its hard to beat all round
