Can you wet sand 2k base coat

Hi everyone ,i was wondering can you wet sand 2k base coat.
I only ask as i dont want orange peel in the final finish,or dose it even show at all on base coat and just in the clear lacquer.
In the past i have only used cellulose and have wet sanded out any imperfections.

yes! if rough maybe 800s moving up the grades 1200 1500 to finish, then ready for another coat Ant!

Hi all,

Well 2k bascoat should be treated like normal cellulose, i.e. it doesn't have hardener in it, so as soon as it's dry you can do what you like with it.

As for orange peel, you shouldn't get orange peel in a basecoat as it's normally used fairly thin (50/50), if you have got orange peel, I'd suggest you've got the paint a little thick, so would be worth flatting it and re-coating, then apply your clearcoat as directed. if you have orange peel in your clearcoat, then provided you've put enough coats on, you can just flat it with 1200 or above and buff it to a lovely sheet of glass shine!!!

P.S. as steve said, don't sand it down then apply clearcoat, you must re-apply the basecoat.

You shouldn't need to treat the basecoat, any work should be one on the lacquer finish because that's where the shine is.

I think my first comment didn't come out right!!! I didn't mean you can treat it like a top coat, I meant you can flat it, re-coat or whatever.....def not polish. or maybe even simpler, yes you can flat it and add more basecoat!

Allkarma do you mean basecoat as in 1k acrylic (paint+thinner), or base coat as in a first coat of colour in 2k, i.e. two-pack, paint+activator+thinner?

If it's two pack you're using, is there a need for clearcoat instead of just flat 'n polish the colour - maybe there's artwork or something on top your color coat o'course.
