I'm thinking about paint ideas for this little bike project I have on the go.
I was going to 'bare metal' the tank, e.g. just d/a or scotchbrite it and clearcoat over it. I know people are gonna say "You can't clear over bare metal" but I'd just like to try it and see, plus I found some Eastwood (I think ?) hi-temp clear that can be used over bare metal.

Anyway... I digress.

Had a few ideas, mainly because I have to fill a couple of indents in each side of the tank, where the original badges were screwed to it (see the body filler questions thread), so the bare metal thing might not work... unless I bare metal it and paint some panels on the sides?

I gather you spray it over a metallic (silver) base coat?
Has anyone used it/them?

can be used over any colour base.i would think most are over black base.
you need to get differant bases and see what you like.

1k clear probs won't stick very well, or for too long. Tried this a long time ago, tried lots of clears over bare metals and they all either failed to seal totally, failed to stick well, crazed, or yellowed, inc "specially for bare metal ones".
I have done 2k clear over bare though, and that did last well. A lot of cleaning/degreasing first. Used thinners and then acetone, until totally clean.

Candy in a can: you choose the base according to the effect you want and the top colour. Rattle cans usually come with a "dot" pattern, which is a bit crap for spraying something translucent. It might come with a flat fan though - to avoid stripes. Worth an ask.
