quite a few years ago i installed cat 5e network around my house 8 ports in a few bedrooms and a couple behind the tv in front room and out back where pc and consols are

son was moaning even after a new internet was installed a few weeks ago that he was only getting 90 on the speed test though we have 500 in the router

so going through the router to the network wall socket to the cat 5 then to wall socket near the pc then a network cable to the pc

the network cable is 300mm from the back of the router to wall socket aprox 20 meters of cat 5e and then 3 meter of network cable to pc and thats giving me 90 as a speed test

now as son was moaning download speed was slow i got a 15m internet lead so pluged it in to router direct to back of pc and got 480

so how come im getting 5 times the speed with a direct cable

a couple of wall sockets 10 year old mk wall sockets and a couple cables and some cat 5

whats your first guess at whats at fault ?

Cat 5 is limited to 100mbps. I bet your patch cable with the better speed was cat6 or better.

no it isnt.

put a cable tester on it. id bet youve got a broken wire. itll drop from 1000base-t to 100base-t if any one wire of the 4 tx or rx pairs is broken.

iv got a cable tester so thats an option sounds good but they where tested when installed
was a few years ago but cant see why theyed fail now

im assuming it lightly to be the patch cables at fault ?


so if one cable eg one of the 8 pairs is open cuircit it goes to `100 speed ?

do another test try the same wire on the wall connection first and rule out the wire being the issue

then try another socket and so forth while you have the long cable

yes it only takes 1 wire.

its far less likely to be the patch cable than the in wall cable. if it terminates to a plate on the wall my bet would be at the connection. ive seen some seriously poor quality face plates, and some real shoddy work terminating the idc connections.

Remake the connectors. Might just be a loose wire connection.

it was me that done the install those meny years ago

the walll pates are mk so not top of range but fair stuff as10 years ago they where quality units

i hope not mice as high up on a wall so i dought it

Get one of those cheap two part cable testers that cycle a signal down all 8 wires sequentially. Very handy devices, I’d not be without mine.

He said Cat5e, which is good for a Gig. For those that care it's named as 5e because the standard added some extra parameters that weren't tested in Cat5.

Had a play this morning swaping about leads and using the long lead all seams to be a bit hit and miss some getting the 500 some not even making a connection more than half the time so I'm hoping its the connections and not the cat 5 cable

I had a network issue over the weekend made a change and was not getting the throughput from one device

Turns out it was a faulty brand new patch lead

Do you have a way of testing speed locally, like copying files etc? Something that tests your network but doesn't rely on the Internet.

I've seen plenty of oddities resulting from poor quality RJ45 modules, or poor installation. For example I had some cable runs to the garage that had been working fine for some time, but would not work with the Starlink router. Replacing with better quality modules sorted it out.

dont forget to factor in other users on the connection as ive had it on a 100 connection

where 3 of us was using the same connection at the same time

2 of us playing an online game and one streaming whilst having a load of open pages at the same time

you will get a drop of speed if they are other users on the same connection with 2 on the same connection it will split the connection and the same is when a third person is also on the connection

one got told off for having 12-16 streaming pages open
the other got reminded they wasnt paying towards the bill whilst also told that they didnt deserve to get all of the connection as its shared

the game used torrent as well they just got whatever they wanted and crashed out other users until id had enough and over rid with a high powered downloader that floored the whole connection

then it became fair
