Car radiator repair cost...

Has anyone had a radiator re-cored recently and know what the typical cost would be?

The replacement price from Merc is £1500, but second hand ones are available from about £300, not sure if I should go for second hand or a re-core.

There were a few drip under the car this morning.

I need the same for my Figaro (Nissan)...mine is an old school brass jobbie. I was thinking about having a go myself (seem to have time on my hands these days!)....but does anyone know where I could get a core from?

Exeter radiators,

Mandy used to do the random vehicles we couldn't get anymore.
Usually between £200+£450 depending on core size and labour intensive.

Good place in Shepperton I can recommend, used them myself and we use them at work.

Brass ones you can sometimes solder up the leak. Plastic tanked aluminium ones leaking on the join can be attacked with vice-grips to squeeze the crimp back up.

Used them a few years ago to recore a radiator for a grey import Kubota digger, very fast & friendly and would use again. @RaceDiagnostics they will be somewhere around the price of the secondhand radiator you quote but your radiator will come back "as new".

Which in itself would be a bit of an unknown quantity.

Yeah a new core would probably be the better option if it's not too pricey!

The problem with secondhand is you don't know what your buying. It could last a month, 6 months, a year? You just don't know

Normally I wouldn't go second hand....but if you can take it off a car that you can see for yourself then I think it's sometimes worth a punt. I bought a second hand radiator for my first Figaro project...I wasn't there for a radiator but I could see that it was a descent low mileage car that had been accident damaged so worth a punt (stuffed the boot with as many parts as I could buy actually...not often you come across a descent car and a seller who is happy to bulk sell bits!).

Agree....some random second hand rad from who knows where is definitely not worth the risk vs a recore.

....I watched a diy recore the other day and now I want to give it a go (I still have a spare rad to practice with too )

Can't help with re-coring but I wouldn't bother with a second-hand one. I did that on my Saab a while ago when it started leaving blue puddles everywhere.

It was from a well-known online breaker, it lasted 12 months then needed doing again, horrible job but at least I knew what I was doing the second time and had all the left-handed double-jointed Torx keys...

The daft thing was, the new one was exactly the same brand ( Valeo I think) as the old one and only about £30 more. I only went s/h as I couldn't make sense of all the different part numbers and wanted to be sure it would fit.

For anyone in the Cambridge area try Anglia Radiators, he has modified , repaired or supplied me with loads of rads over the years. I can recommend his work , he also does aircraft rads for the nearby IWM
