Anybody here made car ramps? I need to make a set to get under my volvo v70 as I really hate going under a car even with axle stands. Does anybody have any plans etc
The trouble with making this type of thing is that the materials generally cost more than what you can buy them for. I get my V70 up in the air on ramps and axle stands, because ramps only work in applications where you're not taking the wheel off.
Jack the car up and place onto the ramps. With one ramp front facing the other rear facing, then the car is going nowhere! Also chock the wheels that are not ramped.
I bought a pair a couple of weeks ago and couldn't believe how flimsy they are, only cheapo ones but they're so light. Bent 'em the first time I used 'em
It might cost as much in materials to make 'em yourself, but they'll be much better quality.
At least my new ones shouldn't interest the thieving-pikey-scrappers who nicked my last pair, no weight to the new ones
I made some virtually identical to Davenports... not tall enough for working under the car, just to raise it 6" or so for jacking (even the dailydriver is too low to get a jack underneath)
hotrodder- exactly the reason i made these... the 2 post lift in my dads workshop wouldnt go low enough to get under a few customers cars and yanking up on the wheelarches is a bit risky!!!
nice one Davenport! The cost of the material isn't an issue as I just managed to get hold of 70 odd mtrs of 40x40 box section 15mtrs of 50x50 and various other bits and bobs for free. So at present I have loads of material to start and finish the three projects I am away to start now that I have a lock up secured for the next two months. Going to be a busy boy!!!
They are in 3 sections and when you have drove up them the 2 ramp sections remove leaving better access. you can see this better on this photo. I need to weld on some load spreading pads on the feet and make a support bracket that bolts between the 2 ramp sections instead of the brick and wood lol
Looks good. I think i would probably want the angle to meet up in the corners and be fully welded to increase the stability, and as you say, some feet are required - i would be tempted to use one piece of plate underneath, again for stability and to prevent one of the legs going wayward and toppling if it was over a soft spot.
l've started to make as set the same as the, restorationramps,l have one completed just the other to weld up.Its the big ones you drive onto and use a jack to bring level, only thing is l think there will be a bit of grunting moving them about.
looking good hfturbo! Unfortunately the ramps have taken a back seat for the moment, not enough hours in the day! But they are next on my list after finishing the two trailers and stove, then comes the double bike trailer a friend is wanting me to make!!!
