Car Repair Pit Ramps

My latest project, made for bloke in neighbouring industrial unit who repairs and sells second hand cars and vans.

50x50x5mm Angle for the rails
40x40x3mm box for the uprights
25x25x2mm for the ramp infill.

welded with a Clarke TE190 buzz box and used a full 5kg box of Netto(!) 2.5mm rods.

Steel cost me just short of 200 quid from James Dunkerley at Dewsbury,
and about 25 hours welding (plus about another 20 designing)

They're just over 12 foot long.
The ramp is 9ft, the box is 3 foot.
Height is 2ft.

Professional long reach high lift jack. plus a pair of axle stands.

The forklift was "for illustration purposes" only.
(ie, he'd gone out so I couldn't borrow the jack. I needed to get underneath to fix a water leak, and I decided to take a picture whilst I was there)

main problem is they weigh a f***ing tonne.
certainly 80 or 100kgs + each.
They're going to be used mainly for display, rather than repair, so will spend most of their time
in the "down" position with the "deal of the week" on them.

I've got to ask (wondering off topic a bit) ...does the name 'big egg' owe anything to that RX4 I spy there? ...I very nearly put the reg B16 ECG on one myself a few years back (with a strategically positioned plastic nut planned for the 'C').

depends on the stock, but either 20 or 24ft
6 or 7.5m

Nice job Bigegg, If they were mine I would add a couple of diagonals to the boxed area to give them a lot more strength.

That's my job for this afternoon

also if you added a axle to the each ramp and a couple of removable wheels

it would make moving them easy

Looking at the design of Bigegg's ramps, I think he probably already has.

God work though, dead handy if you've got the space to store them.

Hi Guys, yes that's the kind of thing I had in mind, I saw some a while back that the ramp part bolted to the 'box' part which was a little longer to support the whole vehicle then the ramps could be removed leaving the vehicle horizontal and secure to work on. Thanks everyone for the inspiration.

these seem a great idea, i have a garage big enough to fit a car in and about a meter around it and two meters in front, do you think something like this would work in a garage ?
