Carbide Burr - Quick Q

Hi,

Just a quick question... Is a Carbide Burr the correct thing that I should be using to grind / tidy up welds (mild steel) in awkward places?

I will be using the burr in an Air die grinder.

If not - any other suggestions?

And where do people buy them from?!

Hello Alastair,

I have used them for a variety of jobs and materials.
They are quick cutting and long lasting so are value for money.
I bought mine from RS components (rswww.com), but good engineering merchants should have them. Occasionally need some cotrolling depending on the location you are trying to clean up.
They are also available in HSS but I would go for the carbide ones. To get a good finish you need a stone and or an abrasive 'bob'

Which "cut" do you go for? They should be OK for Aluminium too - as the "teeth" won't get clogged?

I have 2 that are good on steel but with aluminium they clog up so the ones with less teeth would be better if you are doing mostly aluminium.

IIRC ali ones have a diamond cut patern to them.....

Ones for ally are just a spiral i think, no individual teeth as such.

Garryson should be decent quality.
Diamond ones are corase cut, do do ally, but will clog. A bit of cutting oil helps ease cleaning out of the chips when its clogged up.

I use the Garryson ones in a Hitachi die grinder. The dies are very good quality but find problems when opening out holes etc or in restricted spaces: its very easy for the die to bounce across the hole and when it does, usually ends up bending the shank or knocking big lumps off it. The die grinder seems to run a bit too fast for them, its a single speed only though!

Re Pauls answer above - I use a variable speed elec die grinder. For opening holes you have to slow it down and hold on tight. Once it starts bouncing about it can be a sod to stop!
It's worth getting very small dia burrs for a fast grinder, otherwise the tip speed can be just too much.

Use GT85 or WD40 when using it on Ali it will stop it burr from clogging up. it also works very well on grinding discs as well, just spray it directly onto the disc

I just used an air grinder, thats probably not very helpful but its variable speed - it was a kit from Axminster, has a variety of collets & was only about £20

With the 240v ones, it's said (yet to try it) that a decent dimming stat for domestic lighting will do the trick. (Or maybe the foot pedal off an electric sewing machine?)

110v would -- I guess -- be trickier, but there must be suitable stats out there.

Try and get one with a long snout -- very handy for porting, etc.

Carbide burrs are about the worst thing for getting metal in your eyes, so wear googles, or you could try goggles..

On ali I use extra long HSS milling cutters[flute length longer an inch or more], cut really fast and last pretty good. If your fingers are nearby they make short work of skin.

I bought a couple of cheap hss burrs years ago and they were pretty much useless.
