Hi , can anybody tell me at what amperage to set my arc welder at to operate my carbon arc attachment ? , i was given it a while ago together with a stack of c-a rods , thanks.............

There are a few threads on here about carbon arc brazing.

I remember seeing carbon arc attachments advertised in Exchange & Mart in the 60s. I never came across one being used by anyone, whereas I came across plenty of people using oxy-acetylene.

I assumed it would work a bit, at least you couldn't say it plain didn't work, but anyone who was serious about brazing would have to use oxy-acetylene.

Try "current" as "amperage" is not actually a valid English word!

The current required will very with the size of the carbons and the size of the parts you want to heat.
My AC welder will work with carbon arc at (indicated) currents in the range of about 40 to 80A.

Carbon arc brazing is one of those things, which I assume isn't popular these days because there are better ways of doing things. If I came across a carbon arc attachment at a boot sale for a couple of quid, I'd give it a go out of curiosity.

I have just bought a carbon arc handset and a couple of rods for a quid at a bootsale.....I assumed it was some kind of spot welder ! Can anyone suggest any sources of info outside searches here and google,please? I do a fair bit of brazing.......just not this way!

id assume it would be same for rods of same diameter, ie 100+ amps for 3.2mm ect
