Hi folks, scuse my post being rather long, the question itself though is quite brief… hence the different colour texts
If I slit my existing carpet in convenient ‘out of the way’ locations, and overlay sections of an identical carpet that I recently removed from a car in the scrapyard; will there be a price to pay in increased road or engine noise being transmitted through the ‘gaps’?
…and would I need to create a ‘closure device’ to seal these gaps.
Someone else must’ve done something similar???
The idea is to permit easier access to whichever part of the floor I’m working on, in the course of future welding works… first will be the Driver’s Footwell where I know I have an issue with rot.
The seats will be out next week in the course of fitting better ones, so access will be available to do this with only a little additional work.
I’m not willing to remove the carpet ‘complete’ (explanation below) for any reason but if cutting it up will cause increased ‘Road Roar’, then I’ll wait and cut it up only when the day comes to take the Grinder to the Floor.
The car is still my ‘Daily’ at 26 years old and does spend a lot of its life at motorway speeds
Explanation: why I’m not willing to remove a complete carpet…
…in the course of removing a ‘new’ one from a scrapper recently, I realised that there is a truly enormous quantity of wiring that has to be disturbed to permit this, in particular forward of the Gear Stick, atop the transmission tunnel.
In addition, there are a number of ‘sticky uppy’ fittings in the floor, relating to the Gear Shift and Wiring Harnesses; which are all keen to poke themselves into the factory holes in the carpet in the course of removing or refitting it.
And not to mention, that I’d have to overcome all of these while hindered by the weight of the Transmission linkage pressing down upon said carpet and deal with any electrical problems resulting from disconnection of a dozen or more multi-plugs
…so with this in mind I’ve already cut up my ‘pristine’ complete carpet, coz I’ll never want to fit it complete and it’s a lot easier to store that way.
I cut it just beyond the footwell, where the cut will be hidden by the Transmission tunnel trim and an inch or two behind the front fixing bolts for the front seats.
