Cash machine fail

Very rare event, I needed cash

Cash machine crashed as I entered my PIN and kept the card. Luckily I have a modern bank and the card was cancelled, new one ordered before I left the site

I did get a picture of the problem

I will stick to transfers in future!

Ask for cash back when you do the weekly shop, that's what we do in Aldi.

Enterprise version for ATMs is still supported apparently.

I learned Unix over 40 years ago.
I played with windows a bit as the company I worked for used Unix as the main machine and we had Wyse terminals. ( we built very large expensive Unix only dedicated machines ).
Then we got 8080's to run DOS2.7. The company upgraded various DOS's which sort of worked and had some form of terminal to repair/do things with.
Windows came out, and 3.1 was actually quite slick ( for 16 bits ). Microsoft keep " updrading things" to make it even worserer than the last version.
Win2K was nice !!!. They trashed that of course, because they were not selling any upgrades for it ( cant let the profit fall below 10^9 can we ? ).
So now I am still running Unix, BUT with a GUI thats usable, but still nowhere as good as a terminal. Linus Torvalds knew what he was about .

Wyse 50 green screen then the later, niftier Wyse 60 with an amber screen

This was on SCO UNIX for the cheap clients and HP/UX on HP9000s for those with deeper pockets.

One thing I don’t miss is soldering hundreds of 25 pin (you only needed three actual connections) serial cables in the deepest corners of warehouses and manky offices.

A card machine inside the bank crashed when I was using it many years ago (20?)

I saw the same Windows logo screen then a message "Your card has been retained - contact your bank" so I went to the counter to report it. The nice lady who had been behind me in the cash machine que called me back to say my card had popped out of the machine. Very concerning that anyone dishonest could have taken my card !


If I'm overseas I try to use the card machines that only take your card part-way in, even if they crash or lock your card they return it to you

There’s at least one oil platform in the North Sea still running largely on a VAX system!

Not *quite that old, it’s QBUS with coax field connections.

I rebuilt a complete vax server at a chemical plant a few years back (eventually traced a problem to the backplane but not before swapping the entire chassis/hard drives/cards etc) - as I had done that I got tasked with replacing the QBUS cards on the platform last year which hadn’t been touched in years to swap them out for some with “newer” (!!) firmware. No one else would go near that job but it all went ok horrible feeling as you try and release the stiff metal clips that haven’t been moved for years though, and then try and get the boards seated again afterwards!

I've just had all my accounts locked by Barclays, no reason, the app has locked and they won't deal with it over the phone. They keep repeating "go to branch" FFS.

If you have a banking app see if it has a "get cash: feature.
Mine let's me withdraw cash using a code number rather than putting the card in.
