Cast iron repair - Drummond lathe

I have a vintage (1924 - 1926) Drummond round bed lathe in mostly good condition with one cracked casting (see photo). I guess that most people will suggest pre-heat and a brazed repair but I don't have that option. Anyway, I am of the opinion the design is flawed / fundamentally weak and so I will probably mill away the broken part and pin/screw a new part in its place. I can mill and surface grind to a very good finish and so I think this may be the best solution. However, I'm open to any other suggestions including replacing this part for a spare (anyone got a spare?) or selling the lathe "as-is". I have many other projects on the go and I'm quite happy to pass this one on. All comments gratefully received.

Such cast iron breaks can be brass arc rod welded providing you grind of the crystalization surfaces off the break surfaces and give it a bit of a Vee I don't know if my mate Glan is still alive and still playing on site ,, he did a lovely braze rod arc weld on a 3 inch bearing housing for my friends brother ( who chose to use brute force to try and replace the bearing instead of a bit of skill and brain.

Gas braze would be my choice.
Vee it out and braze it up, job done.

I did similar on a shaper table recently.
I can't mill or surface grind to any standard, so I had to make do with what I had.
It seem to have held up well so far.

Just be careful you don't go too oversize or you will never get a piston to fit. Easy sleeve...

Braze or Oxyacetylene Fusion Weld

I've got a load of cast iron fusion welding to do soon, i'll try and post some pictures.

how about cleaning it up and make a wedge......it'll do the same job....
painted black nobody would know....
it wont break again....
it's not like it's for productinn work....
