Cast to mild steel welding

I have a little project on the go at the minute which will require a mild steel spacer plate welded to a cast (iron/steel??) exhaust manifold.
Is there a specific process for doing this or is it not recommended?

I have a mig and arc welder at my disposal so is there anything i can do diy to join the 2 pieces?
Or is this one best left to a pro?
