Cat s62 pro / flir ir

I'm not really a mobile phone fanboy, but in this instance I am.

I have a cat s62 it has an ir camera it's blooming brilliant it's been used primarily for fault finding oil flow - thermostats,valves and electrical faults- contactors, connections, motors windings and bearings if it's hotter or colder than expected it's often the issue

It's blooming brilliant and has saved more time than its cost.

Can't remember the exact name but a similar idea handheld portable flir camera is issued to most Erik's condition monitoring specialists on the North sea and elsewhere. They spend thousands on proper kit but these new ones that are reliable cheap and portable definitely have their place and very handy indeed

Nice, I want one, far more useful than most features on smart phones. How good is it in terms of calibration, does it need to know the material its looking at to be accurate?

We use thermal cameras at work and they're an invaluable tool for mech and electrical stuff We have a Flir E86 and it's an incredible bit of kit, way overkill for what we use it for.

What I don't understand, is how the standalone cameras are more expensive than those with a mobile phone built in...! Even the cheapest one I can see is over £300, which is same price as a phone!

I wanted one when I bought this phone. Couldn’t afford it so second hand iPhone 7 it was.

On the list though…. I’m well impressed

The standalone camera is much more accurate and better resolution (can detect smaller heat sources at larger distance) compared to the phone variant.
I have an S61 now, S60 previously and they are great to do quick checks with like shown but not for very accurate readings.

Basic thermal, doesn't go as high in temp as the S61.

Longer battery time than in the S61.

Dual SIM + SD, the S61 only have two slots so either dial sim or one sim + sd

It's sped an awful lot of jobs up as it so quickly indicates problems, great for displaying blocked coolers as you can see cold spots.

I agree, I only need an indicator it's far closer than my ir thermometer but that was truly cheap.

I haven't really noticed any issue with surfaces unlike the point and pray ir gun its replaces. It's often within a degree of the machines thermistor.

I use one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Android-Thermal-Imaging-Resolution-Connector/dp/B0716ZGL7C great bit of kit, useful for finding hotspots in wiring harness', blocked DPF's overheating brakes, wheel bearings etc.

I am waiting till they get a bit cheaper then i will get one, i went to a place the other week that has some very hi spec IR security cameras they can tell if i am wearing underwear or not, luckily i was

If the FLIR handheld cameras are anything like their IR Thermometers I wouldn't be impressed. Cheaply made, lightweight, very flimsy feel. You're paying top dollar prices for Chinese crap.

Better to pay the Chinese money for a "lower" quality brand.

If I went anywhere like that, something suitably sized & shaped would be preheated & shoved down the trouser leg just before going in.
