Cebora 140A (Art 848)

Hi,

I'm new to the forum so please bear with me, if this is not posted in the right place.

I have a Cebora 140A welder, I bought it in the early 90s, sold it and have bought it back. I have been struggling with it today on a couple of counts.

1. A tendancy for splattery and porus welds. The metal was well prepped (or as well as an old Land Rover chassis gets) wire was clean and I tried increasing the gas flow (started at 15l/min-30l/min as I was outside but well sheltered). Any ideas?

2. On a couple of occassions it stopped working, I do not think I was pushing it hard enough for the thermal cut-out but nothing was happening when the trigger was pulled. I had the cover off and proved that it was not at the torch end, then it started working again. The other time, by the time I crawled out from under the truck, it was working... Any ideas?

Also, are the internals the same as the 130 turbo-mig, just incase I need to buy spares.

Also also, is it possible to build a longer torch?

15-30Lpm gas flow would be too much Andrew & may explain the porous welds, or could be a breeze as you were working outside.
These fellas within the torch handle wear with age & no matter how hard you press the trigger you struggle to get any gas or power, which may also explain the gas problem & loss of power...




Could also be the main Contactor unit within the machine, but I would guess first at the above

I think I now know the problem - it's the duty cycle. When I previously owned the welder it was used almost exclusively on car body work. I now own an old Land Rover and welding the chassis on setting 4/4 and almost max wire speed. Yesterday, I was making a steering guard and welding 4/4 and max wire speed (6mm plate with a big prep) I could get a run of about 6-8 inches before it cut out for a few minutes.

So it looks like I am on the limits (and beyond) of the machine. I can't really justify a new machine at this point but I was thinking about fitting an additional, bigger cooling fan. Would this work/be a good idea?

It might prolong the welding period slightly but like I've said in previous posts, if you have to run the machine at full pelt all the time and especially until the thermal cutout activates then you really need a bigger machine .
One member recently fitted a central heating blower into the top of his arc welder, it looked the part and did seem to increase the duty cycle somewhat. I reckon if you could aim the flow directly over the transformer you could be in business.
