cebora stag 186 not working on position 3 & 6

hi

I'm new to the welding world and recently bought a stag 186. went to try it for the firate time the other day to discover it doesn't feed wire out on the switch at position 3 or 6! 1,2,4,5 & 7 work fine!

any ideas if this could be a switch issue or board issue?

any help greatly appreciated.

more then likely the switch you coould test it if you have a multimeter
are we talking power settings or numbers on the speed control

I assume he is talking about power settings as they go up to 7 but wire feed goes up to 10.

My first port of call would be the switch too, not that I know anything at all about the insides of the beast.

thanks for the replys yes I mean the power switch! the welder is maybe 7 years old and at first I thought maybe the board was burnt out on 3 and 6 as they were the two common settings used all the time!

I will take the front panel off and investigate but I'm not clued up too much on the electrical side! I have a multimeter tho!

can you still buy spares for these machines?

Check and clean all the contacts on the power selector switch. Lack of use often means that crud builds up on the contacts and stops a setting from working. Use switch cleaner and an airline if you have one.
Another problem I see fairly regularly is that some of the crimp connectors on the switch that connect to the transformer wiring, have 2 wires crimped inside them. Sometimes one of these wires can arc or break. Check each connector and ensure that all wires are solid.
Very rare that this machine has transformer issues, so the switch is 99% likely to be the cause.

dave you were correct mate. took the side off it and cleaned the connectors with contact clean and dried with the airline! wire feeding on all settings now!
