Cellulose Finish

Hi All,
New here & looking forward to first paint job but need expert advise first ~ I have a classic with cellulose finish (I believe) & it is in relatively good condition (odd small blister here & there). I'd like to repaint over with cellulose again without stripping back if possible, but worried about reaction.
Can the new cellulose soften the old? is there a recommended primer/sealer?
Look forward to hearing from all you experts, thats why I joined this forum

As long as the old paint is sound and prepared properly, there is no reason why there would be any reaction or softening.
If you really are that worried though, squirt on a coat of barr-coat first to seal it all in.

you will have no problem ,it wont soffen it up.But it might raise old repairs underneath.if you HAVE HAD a repair it will eat in around that repair and ring out ,if that's the case you need to prime them arias.a two pack primer not aerosols.

Thats a great help. Just seen another reference to Bar-coat, I'm assuming you do all prep & filling before Bar coat & then follow up with a primer before top coats?

As per Tux, will the bar-coat primer negate this also. There may well have been some repairs, the cars from 1961 & fibreglass!!!

all good advice.

you can do a test, rub a hidden patch with a celly thinners soaked rag, if the colour wipes off it's probably celly, if it blisters it's synthetic, if nothing happens it's probably 2k.

You can put anything on top of 2k, synthetic will usually react with anything other than itself & iirc you can put synthetic over celly.

Only use 2k products with the correct safety equipment.

the bar-coat is an isolator you will need to put primer over this.as for putting cellulose over synthetic it will react badly.it will actually craze it and lift it .

Also, you must not sand the bar-coat, or it doesn't work. I would only use bar coat if you really must. If you can put celly primer on without any reaction, all should be well.
