I'd like to change the central heating timer control unit that's on the wall in our hall. Never been a fan of it since we moved into the house a year ago. It's a Danfoss branded panel. Allows us to set the time and temperature for thermostat to kick in etc. Lately I've noticed the boiler kicking in for the heating when it should be off and I have the temp setting turned off. We're out working most of the day so I don't want the heating on when it's not needed and wasting money. I assume it'll just be a 2 wire cable that runs from the panel to the boiler.

not got a frost thermostat in the system has it
mine has and it over rides the system as some numnuts had set it wrong or it's wired wrong as it reads back to front
would think more than 2 wires if it does time and temp

Our old one was a danfoss unit (tp5). If you push (I think) the up and down arrows together you activate the winter setting as octo says above, normally shown by a little snowflake in the display, maybe this?
If you need to change it then yes I would guess it will just be 2 wires back to boiler to give the heat on signal. I still have our old unit which was working fine if you wanted it, though it's about 12 years old now.
Edit - just checked and it's unlikely to be this as it just sets the heating at a constant 5 deg c?

what you might need is a time clock before your thermostat control in another words it will not run unless both the time clock and the thermostat are calling for heat
the boiler has a setting to turn the system over to stop the system going too cold a frost setting on them
vaillant has a run mode every so often to clear the system

it's not on the frost setting. The thermostat temp is set to OFF for all times - 6 sessions a day where it can come on. I have just arrived home from work 2345hrs and the bloody thing is burning away despite it being set to OFF. So there must be a problem with the unit. I can't afford a whole new boiler system this year so hoping a new thermostat controller thingy will solve the problem. For reference the boiler is an Ideal i35 (cheap rubbish installed by the house builder 9 years ago).

sounds to me either faulty digital init or a dieing battery/ cross contamination of rf signal to boiler more than a mortorised valve being the problem
only true way is analogue system digital id say dosnt last over 5 years thats my personal opinion though

As original question, yes if I remember correctly it's just two wires to the boiler, may be worthwhile doing a full reset with a pointy thing on the reset point.

In conjunction with GW8IZR's advice, someone mentioned a frost stat before -
Some boilers will just have a single switched live to control them, but others (like the ones with frost stats) will have a permanent live and a switched live.
Just watch out, as your switched live to the control unit on the wall *may* go live even if you have it disconnected from the control unit, if the boiler has a perm. live and the stat on the boiler closes.
Could make you tingle if you were busy holding it in your mouth at the time!

We have Hive and would recommend it. Can be controlled by your phone, the thermostat or even something like an echo dot. The wife likes her gadgets and lots of our lights are also controlled through Hive and has music around the house with Sonos so all can be controlled via your phone or an echo dot etc.
But Hive is great, if you are coming home later you can turn your heating off or turn it in if coming home early etc. Really easy to use as well.

We have a programmable wireless job which I think was about £30 from Plumbase. In an old house it was hard to find an ideal spot for the thermostat but this thing you just place it where you're going to be occupying so if you want the front room at 20 degrees put it in the front room and that's the room that it controls.
