Cfm requirements

Hi all
I looking to do some diy spray painting furniture and the like. I have a diVilbess starting hvlp spray gun. What is the minimum cfm that I will need and can i get by with a smaller compressor if I add extra storage capacity. I am looking at a 2.5 hp 9.5 cfm 24 litre tank compressor from machine Mart. And if so how big would the extra tank need to be. Thanks for any help you can give me with this.

it all depends on the air consumption of the spray gun. hvlp can vary from less than 10cfm to more than 15cfm.

If you wait for a vat free voucher or look in the returns section of the bigger shops you might be able to afford 3hp 14cfm - get belt drive if you can afford it.

If it’s the startingline gun a quick search looks like it needs 13 cfm with at least a 5/16” 8mm hose to operate efficiently. Adding extra tanks won’t help with cfm output

That depends on how you look at it.

The output from a tank is restricted by the size of the outlet so even a 4cfm compressor's tank could provide 10cfm but it won't keep up with filling the tank. So if you have breaks between spraying and the compressor has time to refill the tank then extra tank will make a difference as it runn longer before the pressure is too low to use.
