Chassis paint

I am planning on giving the chassis of the LR a painting. Starting off with angle grinder and wire cup followed by a wipe with panel wipe to remove any grease. The treat with Jenolite and top off with Zinc primer. Now i am not sure what paint to use as a topcoat. Ideally a paint I can apply with a brush
Chassis black?
Rustoleum ?
other suggestions please.

hi u could look at the products on the frost car restoration site, can be pricey upol products are the recomended ones, been on a bit of a budget meself im using hamerite garage door enammel on mine looks good appears quite tough and goes a away too .cheers craig

I use ordinary black exterior gloss paint from b&q/homebase/wickes etc etc.
Brush on where I can, spray where I can't.
I use gloss as it's easier to keep clean.

It has been relayed to me by a pro restorer that if you mix 2k hardener with hammerite it will go rock hard. Not tried it but you may want to do a test/experiment.

how about scrap the zinc primer and use jotun jotamastic ? then some diy store emamel over the top

I'm about to use this stuff, should get it tomorrow and paint it Sat. I will be rollering it on. I have already used the high zinc primer then 1k stonechip which both have bonded very well. The technical adviser told me its fine to use on 1k stonechip as long as its been scuffed well. You can use 10% solvent mixer before you apply it, then within the 24 hour period spray the cars colour over it, to gain the correct colour match.

Did mine in brushed on epoxy, then NATO green synth but would've used chassis black otherwise. Cheap, tough, easy to use, easy to see damage & fix. The inside of 'ems the main thing though.

Rock hard is just what you DON'T want! It will chip and allow hidden corrosion to start underneath. This is why Hammerite itself has fallen out of favour. The ideal now is POR-15. Not cheap, but does the job. No need for the zinc either if you use POR-15.

another reason not to use hammerite is that only hammerite will go over it in the future, anything else will pickle up

por15 isnt all its cracked up to be , peels off in sheets unless its over blasted metal

Bought a Wurth cartridge gun years ago that sprays O.E sealant & underbody coatings which I put 2k on top of and it works really well but the cartridges are not cheap.

imho POR15 is overpriced and not effective. Used it yrs ago, wish I hadn't. Jotamastic+chassic black much better.

Have to realise a Landy chassis is a bit different to the norm. Large box sections which rot from the inside, the outside is not the main consideration.
Slapping the normal waxes etc on them is a bad idea, it just hides problems until it's they're far further set in and much worse to sort. Better to paint so you can see problems and catch them early.

The only reason POR-15 is not effective is if the prep is poor. Just like any other coating in fact. Follow the directions and it is the best I have used. The instructions are quite clear that unless the metal is prepared, it will fail to bond.

Yes it does need a rough key but preparing a whole chassis enough for POR to grip on will be a pain, and other things don't need that level of roughness. It wasn't great even on roughed surfaces on my Mustang, chipped and rusted in a pretty short time. It's just not as good as epoxy IME in effectiveness, ease of use or cost, but each to his own.

Ive just ordered a can of chassis black so will see how it goes on the short section of chassis I am doing. If it goes well I may do the the lot over time.
And yep, Landy chassis do rust inside out!!!

So far I have done almost one side of a Land Rover chassis, using Jenolie, Zinc 182 and chassis black. I then ran out of Zinc 182 and went to Etch primer and chassis black.
If the weather holds off I will be doing some more at the weekend,
