They still had some in here last week. I bought one years back expecting it to die soon. Still going and it’s good enough to do brake discs on lorries. Tested it against a couple of others and within a degree or two they’re the same.
£7
If they still have any tomorrow happy to post one of you want
From what sort of 'distance' can this item take the reading?I bought this fella a few years ago for a tenner. Now a princely £13 but it's lasted several years, so....

Good point - mine seem to be fine at 6 foot or so - never really tried further away. From what sort of 'distance' can this item take the reading?
The further away the wider the area measured, so pointing the dot at say each plug lead to check the firing from 6 ft away doesn't tell you much.Good point - mine seem to be fine at 6 foot or so - never really tried further away.
I use mine on HGV brakes to check for bind.It depends what you're looking for. If it's pinpoint accuracy then £13 probably isn't going to do it but, as Fizzy said, from 6" to a foot the cheaper option should be good enough for most, I'd think.
Have you got a multimeter that will take a k type thermometer?@bricol has guessed what i am doing. We have recently installed our Rayburn and thermal store and I want it to set up the system and roughly check the calibration on the thermostats on the thermal store etc so we can make sure the pumps are coming on at the temps we want them to. So pinpoint accuracy isnt too important. Reading within a couple of degrees would be nice.
Interesting reading about the surface colour and type making a difference. How would you measure the surface temp of copper pipe/cylinder?
I stuck a piece of black insulating tape to the pipe at the same height on all radiators. I also aimed the cheapo Aldi device at it from the same distance on each one.@bricol has guessed what i am doing. Only thing I’d say, unless they’re different now, is the trigger is really sensitive and it’s got no auto off.
I got fed up of dead batteries when I went to use it and cross drilled the trigger and put and R-clip through.
Other than that, can’t fault it.
