Cheap Storage Idea

I was on the lookout for some old wardrobes to convert into storage cupboards for my garage. I called into a local place that runs monthly auctions for the Cancer Connect charity. I explained what I was after & he directed me towards some old wardrobes. We agreed on £20 for the lot as they were too rough to sell in the auction.

I went back to collect them & he offered me more wardrobes at £5 each. I had a large double horsebox & I filled it with wardrobes!

I sacrificed one single wardrobe with a damaged base to make shelves for another one & brought it down to a utility shed. You would not believe the brownie points I earned for that - they are trying to invent things to put in it, they have too much storage space now. Goodness knows what will happen when I bring these down.



These came with a vanity unit which was used to make the shelves in the left unit - it started life as a wardrobe like the right unit which now has shelves as well. These will be used to hold the stuff currently on a steel shelving unit that will be more useful in my workshop.

So that's 3 good cupboards made, all from recycled materials and all it cost me was a few screws & a donation to a cancer charity.

Little do the folks indoors know that shelving the single cupboards was practice for adding shelves to these double wardrobes.

We have a similar outlet and it's great for stuff like that, I always screw a length of timber about 40x25mm under the width of shelves, it makes a massive difference to what they can support and stops them bowing.

Only downside to using furniture like that is chipboard absorbs any moisture in the air and slowly (or quickly in a damp space) starts to self destruct.

A mate of mine had a clean rags for garages/industry etc business, Used to go to the central depot in our area where all the charity shops sent their unsold or non compliant items, He came back with anything he thought was useful. Along with his clothing items for rags he had loads of bikes of all sizes and electrical items that they wouldn't sell in the shops. One of his best finds was when the prison service was going through a big change, He got tons (literally) of white pure wool blankets that bring big money when sold for recycling,and lots of stainless benches,sinks, pots and pans from the kitchen refurbs.Its just a matter of being in the right place at the right time, Also sold containers full of good clothing and shoes off to third world countries (which i thought the charities should have being doing in the first place)

I was fed up with the area under my bench getting untidy, it used to house 2 compressors which have gone & all that's left is the oil cooled welder & the bin, plus a load of rubbish that doesn't fit in the bin!

I had a nice mahogany cupboard I picked up for free and discovered it was a perfect fit under the drawers!

Now had to decide what to put in it.

There were a mixture of boxed power tools, pullers & socket sets under the other end of the bench & these all fitted nicely into the cupboard!

Now I had another empty space!

Sorted through my collection of office pedestals & got 2 that fitted the space perfectly!

The LH one now houses my electric meter & soldering gear, the RH one holds my grinder discs, freeing up bench space. The units are both on castors so I have a nice hiding place in behind them.

Next job is to replace the bench top. It is made from 9x2" planks, is very uneven, full of gaps & has some woodworm. I'm going to replace it with 2 solid wood fire doors.
