Cheapest place for blasting media (sheffield)

Hello,

Firstly its to go in a sand blast cabinet, so it can be recycled. Also its a suction gun (don't mind buying another though) nozzle size I can get away with is about 5mm.

I've only ever used Machine Marts aluminium oxide sand mix, seem to work ok, but very expensive.

I was thinking about using kiln dried sand, but only using it once. Possibly glass.

I've seen the thread with the big list of suppliers but been a weekend and none of them have price lists (might not deliver). Was just wondering where is the best place (pref local) to buy from and how much I should be paying.

Most of the stuff is rusty turbo housings, with some alluminium etc. Is there a good all rounder?

Give Hodge Clemco at Orgreave a ring. Machine Mart is very expensive, you should be buying it in 25Kg bags. They will deliver and will give a good discount for amounts of 1 tonne and up.

Otherwise look on Ebay.

For a cabinet the best media is chilled iron, you can use it several hundred times and it doesn't produce much dust. BUT you must keep it dry, it rusts very quickly.

J-Blast & sand produce a lot of dust and will soon obscure a cabinet.

They do my head in! Their website lists all the different types of media but when I rang them about crushed glass they tried to sell me beads.

They stock J-blast, but you can't just roll up and pay over the counter. You have to get into reception via a doorphone, wait for someone to come out of the office to take your order, she then disappears to put the order on the computer, she comes back out to take your money, you have to sign a piece of paper to say you've paid cash, she gives you a copy of the order, you get back in your car, drive 100yds down the yard, give your bit of paper to one of the blokes in the stores, you get more paper to sign to say you've got the stuff and away you go. After a few days you get an invoice in the post, and if you're unlucky a statement at the end of the month saying you owe them money!

It's a real pain, the staff are very pleasant and helpful but the system spoils it, they must lose sales.

To add to that, there's two companies under the same roof - Hodge Clemco and Wolverhampton Abrasives, you deal with HC for small amounts, WA for bulk amounts.

I used to go to a local sand pit, well what do you call a place with lot's of sand, to get dried sand for wet blasting, I only ever wanted a few 25kg bags, but they just fill the big trucks. I went through the same procedure[mentioned above], including taking my landy over a weighbridge and getting a bit of paper with the weight.
Amazing thing is the girl would always say, we don't sell small quantities just go in the shed with the type of sand you want and they will put some in a bag. After I had got the sand I had to go back over the weighbridge then go and get a receipt[marked FOC].

They told me they didn't have the chilled iron and i'd have to go to WA.

I hate systems like that. I order off ebay. Paid £35 delivered to my door for 25kg of iron. Not sure if thats expensive or not but saves the hassle.

When you say it rusts badly. How bad is it? If I keep it in the cabinet in my garage will it soon rust? Am i better draining it every time and storing it a sealed tub? Maybe get some of those moisture absorbers out of shoes? (silica beads is it?)

It rusts very quickly and forms big solid lumps. I would drain it off, sieve it, and store it in a warm dry place.

I rang HC but they said i'd have to go to the hull branch to collect chilled iron.

I've tried the chilled iron and it seems to work terribly with my suction type gun. I presume its too heavy and i'm better off getting a blast pot? Any recomendations?

It worked well with my blast pot. Those Ebay pots (Machine Mart sell one too) are excellent for the money.

I use a 20 gall one in my blast room and a 10 gall one with a cabinet.

Might get something like this then, What gun do they come with? Is there a way to run a decent nozzle as the ceramics wear pretty quickly.

Bear in mind that the nozzle, the valve near the nozzle and the blast pipe are all expendable. The mixer at the bottom of the pot also wears out eventually but it can be replaced with standard pipe fittings.

I bought a couple on the 8th August and his listing said 10 in stock.

He still got some, all 3mm though. When I use a 3mm nozzle it seems to take me an age. 4-5mm is much quicker. Doesn't seem to use a lot more air either, my compressor can cope ok. (I think the airline size limits it)

Will the nozzles fit onto my gun? (I imagine its a standard size)
