Chinese rods

Bought a packet of Chinese finest 3.2`s a few days ago from Aldi , no info as to what they are so for a bit of fun I am going to see what they are all about. Left a few outside so they are nice and damp , then found some painted pipe and some rusty offcuts to play with.

Amps needed to be cranked up a bit but they dried out and burned through the rust.



They dont like the paint/rust combo but still managed to get in there



The othe bit of the rod after it dried out a bit on a fillet.




Will find some clean steel a bit later and have another play

Yeh I looked at them, they had some reduced in ours I think, but they seem to burn through ok from your trials.

I have used them before on clean steel and found them very good rods...no complaints here and I bet many sold elsewhere with fancier packaging come from the very same factory

What welder Bob ? ac or dc, inverter etc ?

I had a few dc inverters I let mates have and one was saying he was struggling with it, when I went to check he was using ac rods, with it on a genny also!, so used a few stated dc rods and it was fine !

Don't look too bad! Is it the skill of the operator though. I've used plenty of white box rods on sites, and managed to get them running okay one way or another.

Got some super6 from David a few weeks back, they run just fine on the mighty midget on ac. Almost better than zodian universals... to be fair though, the midget will make any rods run well (except 6010). I expect the super6 would be junk on a buzz box.

ive got a few boxes of 2.5 Chinese rods. they weld perfect everyone assumes if its from china its rubbish not the case .who builds nuclear power stations ??and do there product's all snap at the welds

Don' think there is any debate as to whether the Chinese can produce high quality items and consumables, but unbranded white box electrodes can certainly be hit and miss, and if your on a job last thing you want or need is a duff batch! At 12 pounds for 5kg murex white box 6013 are really good.

At the 2013 Essen Welding Show I was approached by the Chinese Atomic Energy Authority to supply welding products for their Nuclear Power Stations. At that time Chinese products were banned from use. Times change and Im not involved any more so it could be different now. Just thought Id tell you just in case anyone was having sleepless nights, especially in Somerset.
I was answering a PM when I saw this and I thought people should know.

With a BOC inverweld @normspanners , wil try them on my Oxford at some point.

Wont be welding up any nuclear forestry kit so cant see it being a problem

Thought the rods were a bit big for a 3.2, they have quite a lot more flux on them compared to an oerlikon



Anyway had a few minutes to play about with them today on some cleaner offcuts, still needs a few more amps than ideal to keep in front of the flux which in turn means you have to get a move on.
