Hi everyone I'm in the process of restoring a tool (top secret right now as it's an unique and unseen tool restoration on YouTube).
I'm going to take a component at work and Tig weld it for building up an edge or most likely just file it down with a die grinder to make it pretty.
I hate to have not the equipment to get things done by my own.
So I was thinking about getting an AC DC Tig.
I can not really justify a proper machine (like a Selco Genesis for example)
I was having a look on Amazon and ebay.
Known cheap machines are all around 500 600 euro and the options are either
IPO tools or stahlwerk mostly because the 7 years warranty.
On the other hand we have straight from china units no warranty at all if not the one provided by the e-commerce but cheap enough to say I might use them for a while getting them paid back quickly and what happens next is not my problem.
Hitbox and its black cousin unpronounceable name are about 300 euros and you can even use a foot pedal(not included).
Anyways I'm used to torch current control.
Now a friend of mine have one of those hitbox and he says it does work.
He's not good at all at Tig welding.
I do practically Tig weld aluminum every single day at work sometimes even all day long for many consecutive days too.
And I think I'm little good at it (still learning DC and continuously improving AC)
Another problem is that I've only ever used multi thousands euro machines Two Selco Genesis 220 pulsed AC DC water cooled single phase.
And a Saf Fro Prestotig 350W AC DC water cooled three phase.
I'm afraid that there would be really an huge difference.
And by that I mean not the obvious stuff like arc stability because that's obvious.
I mean on current output.
I've practically never had to use more than 150A for most jobs, I've only once need 280A but I was welding a rim hub and it was 60 or 70mm thick (we do odd jobs too ).
I'm afraid that those little Chinese welders won't be able to deliver enough punch for normal stuff.
Car rims are usually around 10mm thick and they usually need no more than 130A for example
Having a Tig welder will make me in a position I can weld everything I may need.
Thin Stainless, titanium, aluminum, magnesium alloys which I'm not capable to do right now .
Have someone any suggestions?
Gas side I'll buy an Harris regulator and a 14 litres argon bottle, in addition I already have a tungsten grinder (50 euro and I took it with me) and I'll obviously have to get tungstens and consumables
I'm going to ask my friend if he lets me try his hitbox Tig welder to get an idea of what expect.
