Chuck key?

Hi all..

I've got a Cincinnati floor pillar drill that I've slowly restored from a pile of rust.. At last she runs after struggling too get a belt to fit .. Anyway, last task .. I'm struggling to get a chuck key for it.. Not sure how you work out the size I will need for it.. Bought a 4 in one multi key in the hope one would fit but no...I believe the chuck opens to a max of 13 mm if that is of help!

Are the any names or markings on the chuck, Jacobs, Rohm, Albrecht etc.

I bought one of those 4 way keys, wouldnt fit the chuck on my air drill. I thought rubbish! That was until I scraped the paint away, now fits beautifully as it should

no I did look but they've either worn away or it's a dodgy chuck.. As many things were on this so called " good running condition " fleabay wonder....

The joys of buying second hand machinery, and sellers who couldn't describe a fart in a thunderstorm. It's no bad thing when you have to fettle a machine thoroughly though. At least then you know that everything's okay once sorted. You never know what problem might be lurking if you don't strip a machine.

Ha yeah.. The worrying thing is the owner.. of the so called engineering co was the one who said "as far as he knew everything was fine with it..." I guess the " as far as I'm aware" should have been the parachute call.. But, I couldn't travel at the time so took a chance, on it as I'd been searching for one for a year or more.. Handle sheared off gear lever snapped in half no key.. Bolts seized and worst of all the bl...y heavy tables mechanism to raise and lower was totally mangled.. They had welded it into the position they used it at.. Oh and a useless drive belt which no way could I get, so I purchased a convertor to allow me to take out the gearing pulleys as I can control the speed now by digital readout..? And I could get a belt then that fits nicely..
Engineers ...? Case for Matt Alwright and rogue traders I think..

Chances are you'll have a jacobs chuck on the drill, our jacobs chucks which open to 13mm use a K3 chuck key.
If the chuck is on a morse taper it may to get a new chuck, we have brought a few keyless chucks for our bridgeport millers from RGD Tools, they have been no name chucks but have been outstanding considering some of the abuse our lads throw at them

I'm a novice to equipment like this to be honest, but yes, I think the chuck is on a taper as it just pulls out and it's driven/pushed back in ..

When ever i've been in this situation i've found the easiest thing to do is take the chuck off and go to an old fashioned hardware shop or auto jumble and just try chuck keys till you find one that fits.

I wouldn't say brainy, I've got uggins of chuck keys from the buy and hope it fits method (including one of them 4 in 1 multi keys) , the take the chuck with you method was born out of frustration

Ha... I did as suggested earlier by cleaning the paint off the 4 way key.. But no luck.. Still no fit ..

I've 2 of the 16mm chucks from RGD Tools, accurate, incredibly smooth, and a bear like grip, yet easy to release. (that reminds me I've a £100ish credit with them
