Clark Compressor cuts out at working pressure

Hi all,
I hope somebody can help me?

I have a Clark 8/35 tiger turbo compressor.This was cutting out after building up to the cut off pressure.

I was told by Machine Mart I needed a new black regulator box with the switch on it.So bought and fitted this and stripped the machine cleaned up and checked all I can.

Now same thing happens,I start up it gets to cut off pressure and lots of air hisses out of the black box area and the compressor shakes and motor cuts out and the trip on the compressor pops out.

It will start again but same thing happens.
Any advice would be great...thank you.

What Psi is it up to when it cuts off/trips?? I think safe working pressure is 115 before the auto cut out trips in. Did you adjust the cut off pressure on the new unit you fitted??

Hi Stan,
thanks for your posting,it cuts out at 150psi.I was told the new black box was factory set correct so left it athat.Hope that was correct?

150 sounds high for that machine, will try and delve a bit deeper for SWP.

Your non return valve on the tank is leaking.

if you can adjust the pressure switch/regulator to trip off at 8Bar/ about 115 PSI it may well cure your problems, almost every small machine of similar type runs at about 8 bar/115 psi. are you sure the pressure switch is cutting out the machine? Unsure what the safety valve will vent at maybe about the 150 but I would have thought lower as the machine is only 115 PSI

safety valves are generaly a few psi above cutout pressure it might be stuck. as u say lower the pressure it does seem high 150

Your non return valve on the tank is leaking.

+1 if it switches off just before the hissing starts.

It's the bit that screws into the tank and takes the pipe from the pump and a smaller pipe to the pressure switch (that black thing you wrongly called the regulator).

Empty the tank completely and undo the nut on the non-return valve, a black rubber "pastel" and a spring should drop out. If they are in good order, clean and re-fit them, otherwise fit new ones or a complete new valve.

The air comes out of the receiver through the one way valve and up into the black box control with the on/off switch, in the picture, on the left, there might be the pressure relief safety valve, it can be checked with compressed air in the receiver and with luck it has a ring pull.(split Key ring) you can get a finger into, pull it out and air should escape, let go it should reseal, air continues up past this relief safety valve and through the pressure regulator, if this is set to 8 bar when this pressure is acheived in the receiver, the compressor will shut off but still be "live", as soon as air is used, the machine should automatically start up, the air you want to use is controlled by the outlet pressure valve and can be regulated using the pressure adjuster. the Receiver pressure recomended at 8 bar will be adjusted in the black box, unplug the machine from the mains, remove cover and the spring inside needs to be compressed some more by tightening --hopefully a nut, unsure never had this model to pieces.
As many machines sold by Clarke run at 150 Psi about 10 bar I think, may be this is a generic switch used on many different models. or maybe they have an 8 and a 10bar preset and you got the wrong one. Hopefully it is adjustable and NOT "factory" preset.
The big round pressure gauge should be reading 8 bar/115 psi when the compressor shuts off and the reciver is up to SWP. ( 8bar)

Thank you very much.The black box control one was not as the orignal one.I was told tha the one i have was the replacemnet for mine.I had to put a bush to get it to fit on one connection.
So assumed it was all correctly set up.
Perhaps not it looks like.

Hello,
I have been back to machine mart today who told me I do have a generic part,but its okay at 10 bar.I am not happy with that so adjusted it down and now its on 8 bar.
Sadly still doing the same as before.

I have looked at the non return valve and its clean and has the spring intact.
May I ask the rubber lozenger has a protusion on one end.
Does this protusion go in the spring end or in the pipe in the valve body.Its daimeter would mean it could go in either way.
Just wonderd if i assembled wrong when i cleaned it all up.
I have found my manual but cannot see a clear image that shows this.I had the nipple fitted in the spring end.The spring is tapered.

I`m putting my neck on the chopping block as I`m only guessing, if you remove the big nut off the Non return valve the one on the right, inside will be a spring and a seal, The seal will be down the bottom of the hole first, then the spring will be next, then the nut.
Having a good look at the Rubber " lozenger" are there no give away marks ????--say its been sealing on its face and a small ring is round the outside, then on the side with the pip, can you see where the Sping has maybe left an impression?? Or vice/versa.
I`m half confident the rubber should be right down inside of the valve, it wouldnt serve any purpose if you put the spring in first then the rubber washer then the cap.
Just my thoughts.

Thank you very much....I am fixed all up and running. I think I may need to buy a new valve as the rubber lozenger is worn.I sanded it down to make it smooth and the machine works well.

i had to sand mine down as it was leaking its fine now and been in 2 years

Nice result, glad your sorted. I bet sourcing a rubber washer is going to be fun. But necessity is the mother of invention.
