Hi folks, hope someone can help me out, I have a Clarke se16c150, had it years its been brilliant, however it now trips the overload button, if I just push the overload button back in it tries to start but trips again, however if I turn off the power switch on the black box air is released from a valve just below the black box, I can then re set the trip switch and the compressor will run for a short while until it trips again and I repeat the process, any ideas anyone, many thanks in advance Andy

Right, sorry I could have explained better, no it doesn't reach pressure, I'd say it will run for about 10 -15 seconds regardless of pressure unless I have pressed the trip button enough times to get it to max, after it cuts out pressing the trip button straight after sees the motor try to turn but it clearly can't and the trip pops immediately, if I wait about 30 seconds I hear pressure release and it will run for the 10 or so seconds, however if I turn the switch off the pressure releases right away and it runs again, its like a release valve isn't working, the brass one on the air delivery pipe seems to operate correctly I'm guessing there is a release valve of some sort in the black switch box, it used to release pressure when the unit reached full pressure its doesn't do this anymore unless as I say I manually switch it off, thanks for your welcome and reply I have some spraying to do and its a bit of a pain as it stands many thanks Andy

If the non return valve (NRV) on the tank fails open you will get a constant stream of air from the unloading valve in the switch box with button on the box set to off.
If you persuade it get some pressure in the tank and you switch it off at the red button do you get a short hiss from the unloading valve?
If the tank is getting pressurised then the NRV is not blocked.
Once it's started running and building pressure and then the cut-out trips it sounds more like a motor fault, and then most likely a capacitor in the box on top of the motor.
Will the pump run OK if you run it with the outlet valve on the tank open, ie venting to atmosphere and not letting pressure build up?
Try taking the belt off and see if the motor runs.

yes, I get a little pressure up, it cuts out, I switch off and I get a hiss from the switch box, then it starts again, it seems to run without a belt ok, it still cuts out of I have it venting to atmosphere, in fact it seems to run longer if I'm creating pressure in the tank
ok, sorry for the delay with this I've been out of action with food poisoning the parts arrived today and its now sorted, the capacitor as it happens wasn't the problem, it appears to have been a faulty overload switch, all good now, and thanks for your help, cheers Andy
