(Clear) UV Safety Glasses Efficiency?

Hi everyone,

New to the forums and to welding and I haven't been able to find a satisfying answer to the following question: Do UV safety glasses help block out reflected UV light from reaching your eyes behind the welding mask (enough)?

From what I've read I understand reflected UV light can cause quite some problems so I figured wearing UV glasses could potentially help prevent some or maybe all of these problems (I like to sleep without sore eyes). I understand the glasses will only help block out low intensity UV light but is it enough? What type or color glasses will work (best)?

I use amber glasses at work (dental clinic) when curing composites and they seem to work fine for that application.

What is your opinion? Have any of you had sore eyes from reflected UV light when welding? Can anyone point me to a website or maybe provide some (scientific) prove that these glasses work?

The headshield that you will use will do the protecting, and filter out the UV.
Sometimes we do get sore eyes, but rarely. Normally down to our own stupidity, doing thhings like tacking a job up, by glancing to the side.

Of sometimes from working closely to someone else welding. Something that ought to be avoided.

ive never had sore eyes from reflected light as said above tacking or using a cracked screen common sense prevents all

Polycarbonate and UV, probably the sort of thing you've already read/knew.

As Hitch, generally only an issue when working around other welders. At the distances involved (reflections, someone else arcing up just as you lift your bucket) normal safety specs will save you from arc eye

Working alone i don't bother with safety specs under my mask most of the time. Never had arc eye, been caught out in someone elses workshop and managed to burn the back of my ears from my arc reflecting off the wall behind me or something else but that's it

I have had arc eye from reflections off water when someone else was welding on a boat.
Clear lenses especially if made from glass will protect the eyes from uv.
Same as hotrodder tho, working alone I don't use any.
